The guages themselves wasnt to bad. If you remove the whole console it makes it a much easier. The tuff part was the blinkers, Brake and bright lights. I made an aluminum block that the bulbs could go into and cut them in to the top of the pods for the speedo and tach. Took some time to get right but came out pretty good.
Here's a picture. Kind of hard to see but up in the top of the pods.

Corvette Clocks by Roger will redo your originals in white. I've not seen them in a car yet, but I've seen a set for C2 ready to go in. Price was reasonable I'm told.

Here is the reply and the original email. I'm not interested in paying this guy money to "rebuild" my gauges that are in perfect working order so someone else gets to be first... Am I wrong to be a little miffed at his reply????

Markus,

I can do the white face silkscreening for you, however I will only do it if
I restore, rebuild and calibrate all of the gauges. This is not something
you need to tackle yourself without the correct calibration equipment.

Does anybody make white faced gauges that have black needles instead of red?

Well, from his point of view he probably just wants you to be happy with the end result. If they stop working in a week, you will be unhappy with him. Besides, he will have to take them apart to silkscreen the faces. I wouldn't be too unhappy with them-they do a very nice job. I din't see a quote on the whiteface part, but general resto on center cluster is $329 with a clock conversion and the speedo/tach are $85 each. You might get into the Autometers cheaper, but these would bolt right in and hook right up.

I have been in touch with AutoInstruments regarding the white face conversion they did on the Shark Attack car in one of the recent Corvette Fever magazines. Here is the email thread between us...and the picture they sent me.

HI Ed,
We can rescreen your gauges in white just like the
Vette cluster in Corvette Fever for $375. We can calibrate the
small gauges for $10 each and rebuild the speedo for $150, if necessary. You can send the cluster to us by UPS or whatever
is easiest for you.

Please include a daytime telephone number and
return address, we'll bench-test everything and call you back with a free estimate!

Turnaround time is about two weeks!

Thanks,

Gentry Zentmeyer
AutoInstruments Corp.

Comment: I am in the final stages of an Interrior
Restoration on my 1980 Corvette and read the article in Corvett Fever where
they installed a set of your "white faced" guages. I am VERY
INTERESTED in this and would like to know what we would need to do to get this done... i.e.
send clusters to you, cost? etc.

Thanks In advance...

Ed

I'm currently investigating costs of getting my own screen printing equipment... that way I can put whatever design I want on the gauges.

If I ever get around to replacing my broken tach and intermittent speedo, I'm going with the Autometer Phantoms (as shown above). I thought about replacing all 5 center gauges, but they all work, so I'll keep the gauges and get a graphics place near me (Sticky Graffixx in Montreal) make stick-on overlays for those 5 faces. I've seen their work and they can match the texture and colors of the Phantoms faces. Then all I have to do is paint the needles orange. Much cheaper than spending $60 x 5 replacing the originals.

If the gauges still work fine why not just print the gauges on white vinyl from an inkjet printer? I've seen pictures where someone did that and they looked great, supposedly perfect in person as well.

Finding or making the right pattern to print might be some work, but since you are printing it yourself on your own vinyl, you can customize it however you want.

Depending on how far I get into tearing my interior out I may try this myself.

Printing on vinyl works for flat gauges. C3 gauges are all curved.
