I work with this cat that has a pretty nice C4, he claims that he gets 34-37 miles per gallon, when I asked him what tow service he uses, because the only way a vette will get that kind of mpg is on the back of a tow truck. I think I upset him, but c-mon 37mpg in a bone stock vette. what do you think?
In the wife's '94 coupe, I saw the instant mpg readout race to 99 and then stop. Of course, we were going down a hill around 75+ mph while the engine was basically idling.
So, unless your buddy only drives downhill, I'd be skeptical of this claim. I think 30 mpg is optimistic. I get 17 around town and maybe 26 highway in the '94.
However, I can easily get 50+ mpg over a distance of 90 miles with my C3. How? Drive up the hill (mountains) to about 11,000 feet. (Ignore this first part of the trip.) Set the odometer, fill the tank, then coast and idle all the way back home. Voila! 50mpg

Possible..like going down hill in neutral maybe....have to be a real long one,though...
C4s were rated at around 17-19 city and 24-26 highway and performed on par with those numbers, but 34-37 is hard to believe. He's miscalculating, driving like my Grandma, quoting downhill highway mileage only, lying, or all of the above.
I have a 1986 C4 with an automatic transmission. I get 20 - 22 mpg on the highway, and about 18-20 around town. I dont think that it would be possible to get 30-35 mpg. In the C4 forum the topic of gas mileage came up, and with all the postings there, not one of them was in the 30 mpg range.

24 -27 is more likely for highway mileage, 14-18 city.
Tell him to start with a full tank, reset the average mpg to "0" and drive as he normally does for one month, refilling when necessacry of course. Tell him not to reset the average mpg at all. Then look at it at the end of one month. Unless he lives 10 yards off the interstate, drive 20 miles to work and works 10 yards off the interstate his average mileage will probably be around 20.

My 96 never saw that kind of number. I believe his statement to be incorrect also. However, I did have a 95 Z28 with a 6 speed and left my house and headed to Panama City, 8 hours, and we averaged around 27 MPG. Most of it was Interstate driving though.
He keeps telling me that we will go for a ride and he will show me, but when I tell to bring it up to work, there is always an excuse why he can't. You what they about excuses.

My '90 would get 25/26 mpg on the highway. No way for them to get into the mid 30s. My new '04 C5 got 29 mpg on a recent 3000 mile trip
