I have looked at a 1978 silver anniversary (2 tone silver) car a couple of times over the last 6 months. It has 76,000 miles, 3rd owner, AT, L48, roll up windows, no PDL. It has solid and glass tops. It has original paint that is a little faded in spots. It is a good solid car that has been owned by the present owner for 11 years. It has a couple of bad spots on the leather on the seats and needs tires. He wants $8700.00. It might be the best all around car I have looked at as far as being an honest old car. The kinda weak paint is the worst part of the car. Wadda ya think? Thanks.
Had mine for 26 years..new paint..seats..etc..123,000 on original L-82 engine...M20...3.70:1 rear...appraisal currently $16,500 give/take...think from what you describe that may be a good buy....??? Try to get detailed maintenance history...what state ?
I paid $11,500 for mine last year. IT is an L-82 w/ close ratio 4 speed. The paint was in very good condition as it had been repainted in 2001 to the tune of $5K. 42K original miles. Good tires and the brake system had just been reworked with stainless sleeved calipers. Interior needed a good going through but the seats were in OK shape. Also not power windows or door locks. Had the original AM/FM 8-track (that worked after some tinkering by me).
I ended up re-dying the vinyl portion of the seats and refinishing the interior. COst about $3K due to all of the 'while I'm at it's'.
I would be concerned about the cost of the paint, on the two-tone vettes this can be a real killer.
Also, how's the frame look? Mine was in very good shape especially around the body mounts.
I think that the $8700 is probably a fair price for the car. After checking the frame for rust, condition of the brakes, general body, etc. you then have to decide what to do about the paint. I would think that you are putting another $4000 or so into a good paint job, which brings the price of the car up to around $13,000.
With this car not having any of the convenience group options, such as power windows, power door locks, does that give you any negotiation room?
The paint is pretty decent original, not perfect but probably good enough for me. I would not paint the car and think it would clean up to be a fairly nice driver. I offered $7500.00. I really would like power windows and locks but this is as good an old car as i've seen in a long time. No rust underneath, bubba never got close to it, and I like the seats in the 78 and older cars. I also like the fact the car has been with the present owner 11 years.
I'd say it is likely a decent price.......two sets of tops a real +
Been kept inside a lot? Probably since paint is ok.
Drive her like she is as long as you can cause once you start cleaning her up it's about 25-30K more which means she's yours forever.
Ask how I know.
