I have never thought of it as an insult, redc3. Look at it as though it's connected to the number of views of that particular thread. Often the # of views are 10 to 20 times the number of posts. Frequently more than that if there's good photos/video or a sexy sounding subject.
Does anybody know whether is used more in General or Tech/Perf?
I understand the "lurk" part of the smiley. However, the little face on this lurk smiley has a bit of a smirk to his expression. I had the notion that this meant the "lurker" was expressing an incredulous or doubtful attitude, or even worse, I sometimes wondered if it had a BS message. Maybe we should have a smiley that indicates a "lurk" without the smirk!

this is the same thought i had. i took it as an insult or a know it all atitude type of thing. so easy to get the wrong message.
If one thinks about this, popcorn suggests sitting in a movie,watching....so the logic of the popcorn with a smiley face makes sense in the context of the forum inventor...
