I am just about ready to put my 77 project car on the road. The tires that are on the car now are unsafe. The size the previous owner had on the car is 245x60x15. Discount tire web site says that I should use 225x70x15. The 245's look extremely oversize for the car. I will be using the car as just a weekend and nice weather pleasure vehicle. What sizes do you guys recommend?
I see this come up from time to time so I'll add my 2 cents worth: I've had great luck with using Goodrich 255s on the front and Goodrich 275s on the rear. I've done this on my '81, '73 and now on my '72. The '72 saw the narrowest of gaps to the brake ***'ly; I had a custom 2.5" exhaust added by an experienced shop using Flowmasters. These mufflers are quite small and he managed to tuck them more forward than factory. I don't race the car but I do blow it out once in a while and I've taken corners pretty fast now and then (whenever I get the bug) - so for me the 275s don't present a problem and they look great. They stick out about an inch and a half from the wheelwell lip but not so they look like your car belongs to a 17 yr old.
Good luck and enjoy that beautiful car....Mark
I bought my car with 255/60/15 front, and 275/60/15 back.
BF Goodrich.
One day, one of the front-tires grew a hump, and it was so bad, I was lucky to borrow a set of wheels from a friend, so I could get home safe.
**** happens, OK.
But I found out, that with my borrowed wheels, 235/60/15 Goodrich, in front, the car was much better to drive. Much more stable on the steering.
So I will go for 235/60/15 in front.
My 78 has 235/60/15 all the way around and they work well.
When I replace them I am going to a larger diameter.
Right now the speedometer reads almost 5 mph fast at 70.
Anything that will make it turn less rpms at highway speeds is good in my opinion.
Late C3's came standard with 225/70-15's. You could order the car with optional 255/60-15 tires. The option was described as an appearence option. Handling was actually better with the 225/70-15 tires.
