Depends on what you want to buy. I bought a pair of patriots via Ebay and they need both drilling and bolting to mount. There are easier sets available though.
I wasn't gonna do it but after being on this forum and reading up on the side pipes im gonna have to do it this winter. might help the engine out too.. Im so pumped for a set of those.
I just got my set of Patriots in the mail. I plan on installing them myself as well as running them directly off the exhaust manifolds. I have had headers in the past & do not want them again. These were inexpensive & after I fool around with the brackets, easy to install. I plan on having a muffler shop bend new pipes from the manifold to the pipe inlet once I have them positioned where I want on the body. I also plan on notching the rocker moldings so I can get them hanging in the "right" spot.

I will as soon as they are done, it may be a few weeks before I install them. I need to get it inspected this month & will probably get it inspected first before I remove the factory exhaust.

Hooker headers and side pipes. The hardest part of the whole process was getting the stock drivers side manifold off and out (69 BB), a real pain in the butt. The headers and pipes went on in about 2 hours total. The fiberglass trim pieces below the door had to be trimmed by the front wheel wells. I love em!!
I'm just wondering if anyone has the 4-in-one sidepipes from JC Whittney-Summit ;(pictures of them on).How where they to install? how do they sound?(good I hope).Did you have to cut or trim anything? Can ya see the fake pipes when installed?I need help with some questions before I order; If they are worth the trouble, I don't want the headers just want to connect to the stock manifolds.DO THEY LOOK GOOD? Thanks for the help man!!! Shady.......

If you know what you're lookin for, ya, you can easily spot them. Looks like a Bubba mod to me. IMHO, go Hooker or Factory style, everything else looks cheap-o.
Considering side pipes for my 78 for off road use only of course
how do they install?
do you have to drill the frame to bolt them up?
is this something i can do or is it better left to a
muffler shop?
I put Hooker headers and pipes on my '78.....get the car about 18" off the ground and install from the bottom....and the '78 frame already has slots cut in the frame where the Hooker pipes mount....over-all it was an easy job...had it done in about 5 hours. Yeah...mine are "off-road" too....about 5inches "off road"
I went with the JetHot sterling coating on the headers and pipes and I put the STS spiral baffles in. I am very please with the look and the sound is incredible with my stroker exhaling thru them
Thankfully I still live out in a part of the country where they still don't do emissions testing and I am free to ruthlessly murder as many spotted owls as i want (j/k in case any treehuggers are reading)

this is the exact answer i was looking for, sonce mine is registered QQ here in NJ no need for inspection so i am definitely leaning towards
the side pipes now.
thanks again for all the answers
My Hooker headers pretty much fit "like a glove"....I was a little worried at first just looking at them when I pulled them outa the box, especially the left side for clearance around the steering box. I did end up making a very small crescent shaped notch in my right side rocker panel in order to allow clearance for the forward most primary tube but like I said overall they fit like a glove and the pipes can be manipulated to clear the bottom rear corner of the doors with no problem.
There are times you could use an extra hand, but I did it without a lot of trouble. You may have to dimple your header near the steering box. I have a 1970 and it is a little bit of a puzzle at first trying to weave the headers up from below, but worth itl
