painted 73 grills
bought krylon chrome paint and took both grills off, knocked down the edge w/80 grit paper...after cleaning i painted them g.m. wheel black .then once dryed i took the cap from the chrome paint and sprayed some in the cap.using a q-tip i was able to paint the leading edge without running or brush marks, came out nice.now i cant wait to see the center grill in on monday when ups delivers it,will post a final photo------------

Looking good Carl. I have used the same method on other parts and it works great. Q-tips give great control if the paint is thin.

im sure the pits in the fins could be brought back up to level w/ some j.b. weld or fiberglass resin/hardner but mine were so few i just let it go till next time...also wondering if nos grill coming monday will be a flat black, semi gloss ,or gloss? may have to re-do these to match, but it was e/z so really doesnt matter, time of year for this kinda stuff!

I need to do this on my new 68 grilles and was wondering how this method compares to the Krylon Silver Leaf Pen I read about on this forum in another post.
Any ideas which is easier or gives better results?
Thanks,
Kurt

I did something similar with my 68 grills. I didn't bother to repaint black, they looked reasonably ok. I did spray the silver paint into a lid, but I used a small foam paintbrush (instead of a Qtip) and was very pleased with the results. With the grill being outside, exposed to weather and even carwash I wouldn't use the leafing pen for this.
Of course 68 (and early 69) is the only year that the black plastic grills actually came from the factory with the leading edge painted silver.

PRNDL,
Did your grills come out looking chrome or silver, because I still have my old center grill and I think they are supposed to look silver, and not glossy chrome but I am not sure.
Any help appreciated.
Also, how did yours hold up when you wash the car? Did the paint stay on or did it come off?
Thanks
Kurt

so 73 grills were chromed? Didn't know that. I thought you were just doing it to make them look nice (which they do!) Mine look silver because I used silver paint. It was just a can of leftover spray paint I had in the basement, not something I searched for to use on my grills. Can't say they look factory tho. I have seen original 68 grills and they look very different.... problem is the ones I have seen are pretty rough and peeling so I really can't tell what they looked like from the factory.
I have a pic of a 68 bowtie, but it was in a dark garage so the grill doesn't show up too well.
Here are a couple of mine, with the painted silver grill.
