I replacing the top outside corner chrome pieces on my windshield frame. How much work am I in for and do you know of any info on doing this. Mayber a past post or article.
Thanks for any help before I tackle it tomorrow morning.
I couldn't find any way, but my WS was cracked anyway so it wasn't that big of a deal. I kind of figured it out going through my assembly manual, since the corners went on before the WS was installed. You might wait a little bit though. Lots of crafty people here & maybe someone has figured out a way around it. Sorry I didn't have the 'correct' answer.
I replaced my `72 with the WS still installed...BUT, be careful. The two front screws are right up against the WS glass. I used a skinny phillips head and I still chipped a small amount of glass while removing and replacing both sides.
GOOD LUCK!

Dave, did yours have the original glass? My replacement glass is a bit thinner than the original, so maybe your method would be possible with the newer glass. My glass was old & thick and I couldn't even get a screwdriver to fit. I guess the method depends upon the thickness of each particular WS.

I was able todo the same once. Used a few different drivers and even ground one down a bit. I think it depends on how thick your glass is and also how close it was installed to the top frame.
Assuming you have all 4 screws removed, then it should come off fairly easily. There will be various amounts of that sticky, black goo that GM calls sealant. Be careful, I've seen several examples of these where the edges have been chipped by screwdrivers. These peices are just cheap castings and the edges break easily. So, if possible pry from underneath, not from the end. New ones are available for your 70.
Thanks for the help Ratflinger. I'm not that far yet. have the screws off on the inside of windshield frame but now need to take window molding off front of windshield but not sure how that comes off does it just snap in and out sorry for dumb questions on this but can't find an info on it in manuals and it's the first time I've attempted this project.
Side pieces are screwed on, screws may be under weatherstripping. After removing the them, just pry the top on straight up. It has 2 clips on each end. It has been stated elsewhere that the top one should come off w/o removing the side strips. Remember where the side strips were located as this affects seal of the side window.
The top trim of my 73 is held on by clips along the top that are screwed into the header. The side trim pieces are 2 part (one over the other). Take them off first. You can peel the weatherstripping out of the track to get to the screws.... They should be well sealed and just pry slowly after all screws are out.
The heavy top chrome corners are held on in front as stated prior and I chipped the edge of my glass which eventually led to a large crack. If you can get the windshield out I think it is best. Is your windshield dated original? If not you may want to have a pro install a new one. Also are you taking the chrome out to get to some repairs of the "header" like I was (maybe leaking?)

Take the side trim pieces off first. These screw into the A pillars. The screws are concealed by the weather strip which can be pulled out from the channels that hold it in. It's also glued so be careful not to tear it.
The upper trim piece must be removed with a special tool. Go to one of your better auto parts stores and tell them you need a tool to hook the clips used to remove windshield molding. The tool is a thin piece of spring steel with a hook on the end. You drag the tool between the glass and the trim until you catch one of the clips. Then you pull out on the clip while prying up on the trim piece. The number of clips that you have to release varies by model year. My '68 had 5.
If you are removing any of the screws for the trim clips or the corner pieces be careful not to chip the edge of the windshield. I put a small chip in the edge of my windshield glass and didn't think anything of it. I came back out to the garage the next day and found a crack all the way down the windshield that started from where I put the knick in it.
