I just got replacement floor pans and am trying to figure out how the seat supports mount. The new pans have a metal strip underneath that lines up with the front mounts, so I understand that part. What I don't understand is the back. There is a small indentation near the back that looks like it would line up with the back of the inside rail (though there is no pre-drilled hole here - no big deal). On the outside, though, there is a big indentation about 2" deep. I know that the seat belt retractor goes down in there, but where does the seat rail mount?
When I got the car, the floor had been cut and fiberglass mat was laid down, making the floor more or less flat. I never got to see this part before the modifications, so I'm really at a loss here. I borrowed a friend's 78 AIM, but I couldn't find a clear picture of how this originally went together.
I think I showed you this pic before you started...
You can see the indentation on the inside, and the deep retractor-pocket on the outside. If you test-fit your seats (tracks attached) I think you'll see that your inside rear track hole will line up with the inside indentation, and the outside rear hole will be back of the big indentation, you probably have 2-3 inches of "flat" area there I hope? My replacement pans were the same, but they were also out of an actual Vette, yours are repros right? Should still line up though. Oh, you'll also see that both seats are canted a bit towards the outside of the car...they don't point straight ahead, that's normal.
Thanks a bunch and sorry to be so dense. I went out this morning and put the seat rails down and both backs went exactly where you said they would. It just didn't look like there was enough room until I laid them in, plus there were no rear holes (though I now understand the purpose of the two square nuts that come with the pan). Maybe they don't drill the back holes in case people's seat rails are slightly different.
Anyway, I'm ready to start the cutting. I haven't put the new fuel lines in yet so at least I don't have to worry about hitting these. I will definitely watch for the brake line, though (thanks for the tip!).
