It is a mechanical clock. The winding mechanisim is what your hearing. All is good.

Can't say i've had that experience but I did do the quartz conversion and the clock works perfectly now.

Anyone know the size of the nut for the wire on the clock? My '75 didn't have a nut on the back of it.

I believe it is a #8 nut. Usually that's what I start with and go up or down from there!

I agree, clicking noise is the winding mechanism in the mechanical clock. I think it runs on a set of points and that is what "clicks".

There are two contact points. One is stationary that has voltage, and one on the end of the winding spring. When the point contacts meet, voltage is applied across both, which then pushes the winding spring mechinisum point to it's max travel, away from the stationary point. (click) This winds the spring. As the clock ticks, the spring slowly unwinds bringing the spring point back into contact with the stationary one....(click...rewind) probably once every minute or so. Clean up those two contacts with an ignition points file, clean up the internals and lightly oil, and make sure your grounded...should work!!!!
