I'm no looking for some large boomin system, but I'd like to have some quality and sound level. What do people run for speakers and where do they put them?
I can do without a sub as I don't want to wire in and install an amp and sub/box... I already bought the gauge bezel with the one din opening for a modern CD player. Figure 40x4 at a minimum power output...
If you take out the passenger side lower front dash, you can disconnect both of the dash speakers. Then take off both kick panels. Behind the kick panels put 4X6 plate 3 or 4 way speakers. They will fit in there. You'll also see if you have any rust coming down from the birdcage!
In the back put 6X9 5 way speakers.....you can get all these speakers on ebay or just Google for them and you'll have lots of places from which to buy speakers.
For the back 6X9 speakers, go to Walmart. They sell a "speaker enclosure box" that is already covered with carpet, etc. and is real cheap and easy to put the speakers in. It even has the disconnects for the wires. Make the wires come out of the back of the rear carpet, but leave them long enough so you can slide the speaker boxes to the front of the back storage area, so if you have some luggage you can put the luggage in the back and the speaker boxes closer to you.
A new stereo in these cars makes cruising much more fun.
Need to buy 10 Ohm speakers if you are keeping original radio, at least that is what I understand. Most aftermarket speakers are 4 ohm and will over heat the amp.
Sorry i wasn't more explicit in my original answer. Mine are still stock and need to go. I want to do what fjetb suggested but my kick plate won't come off without drilling the screws out and I'm reluctant to do that. That's where I'd put speakers though.
Toolking...drill them out if the screw heads are stripped...then slide the plastic kick panels toward the door opening and they'll come off. No cuts or mods for the kick speakers...although you will have to drill holes to mount the plates. It is just steel plate behind the kick panels. Later years had speakers in there. The back speakers just require running the speaker wires under the carpet to the back. The real problem with the original dash speakers is that the sound goes directly up into the windshield where it bounces in all directions. Lots of distorsion, and pretty much un-hear-able at speed if you have a vert or if your windows are open in a coupe. Mine is an Aiwa 52 X4 CD/CDRW/wma/mps/etc player...I hear it great up to 70mph with the top down...
What is interesting to me is I owned a 68 vert in 1970...and I did the very same mod then...although it included an 8 track player!
I'm doing the same thing right now. I decided to put some midrange/tweeters in the dash and some woofers in the kickpanels. High frequencies will reflect off of the windshield and bass travels from anywhere pretty well. Just today I installed all of the wiring and put the new speakers in the dash; the woofers are still "in the mail". Both sets are 4" x 6" speakers. The top dash pad is a bear to work with. [I'm sure it must get installed before the windshield is put in.] At least you don't have to take the driver's side dash panel out. Oh, another thing. The original Corvette radio wants to see about 10 ohms on each side. Most new speakers are 4 ohm or 8 ohm. I bought all 4 ohm speakers and am wiring each side in series, so I end up with 8 ohms. Should match OK. If you want additional dash disassembly tips. Send me a direct e-mail [cmanker@msn.com].
No worries on the ohm load/rating. As I said I'm putting in a modern DIN style CD player...
I'd like to see some pics of where the speakers go and if people have modified anything to fit better speakers in there. Although I don't really want to cut anything permanent.
Check out www.millionbuy.com for decent prices on a variety of speakers....also they carry a radio bezel for a C3 for about 15 bucks.
The bezel is on sale for $9.95 or something cheap like that. But that wont fit a 1/2 DIN style modern CD player.
I got one from Vette Specialties with a new/cutout gauge bezel sitting in a box in the garage.
I've got a friend who works at a high end stereo shop and I usually get my parts from him, but with these "funky" sized speakers they probably don't make any high end speakers for those sizes.
Sorry about jumping in late, but nowadays you can buy a radio that will fit in the dash and is blue tooth ready. No need to wire speakers, just buy blue tooth speakers and pare them. Play on! https://www.classiccarstereos.com/19...h-usa-740.html

LATE, a bit of an understatement, THIS IS A 14 YEAR OLD THREAD.

It being said that it's a bit late, with your reply I figure I should explain the obvious. I was looking through the forum for advise on stereos and speakers for my "new" 1970 Stingray Coupe when I found this post. I answered it because someone who may not know options in the future could have the same questions and issues and an answer. Some of us are still buying and restoring Corvettes.
