I am looking at getting a roll bar for the 68 vert and have seen a few good ideas out there.
I was wondering:
1). The 'Shark Bar' with roll bar hoops that I have seen. ( http://www.speeddirect.com/index.aspx?nodeID=121 ) It looks good but I have not seen one in person. Is it heavy duty enough to help with a roll over event? I have read that it is not certified for 1/4 mile usage. Any feedback as to it's utility?
2). A four point. This seems to offer a greater amount of security in case of a roll over event. Would this absolutely be the way to go for protection?
3). I am not looking for a full cage even though I realize it would be by far the best just in terms of safety.
the shark bar doesn't do anything for rollover. Just provides 5 point seat belt and camera mount.
The 4 point is the minimum needed for racing. You need to make sure you get the proper diameter usually 1.75 or better DOM tubing with a wall thickness of .120 or better.

Wow around here only a 6pt is considered "legal", this is for the road racing and NHRA tracks.

NHRA rules actually require 5 point rollbars to be legal to 10.00 with a coupe (or convertible with hardtop) if the firewall is unaltered..
Below 10.00 needs a full cage!!
GS, that's the weirdest roll bar I've ever seen, if you sit in it, is your helmet higher than the roll car? Sure looks like it.
nope, the helmet is way below the rollbar.. The seat is about 3 to 4 inches lower than the factory seat!! With the factory seat, the helmet would be about the same height as the top of the bar..
The way that bar is setup is the only way to retain the convertible top and still be NHRA legal!! I haven't seen any other C3 Convertible that has a functional convertible top and a legal 6-point rollbar..

I know I couldn't run Giant's Despair in '97 because I didn't have a full cage. Would have been grandfathered in if I ran in '96. But that was BSP in a solo 1 event (hillclimb). *shrugs*
What the hail do you know about road racing or for that matter drag. Aren't you a show 'n shine guy????
i guess its a Naaa-orleans thing.
seriously, i have the 06 SCCA rulebook and i can't find where it says 6 point minimum.
Show N Shine?? I have a 15ft'er, don't belong to any car clubs and loathe entering cars into car shows. I'm an atypical Vette owner I guess.
I talked to the owner of the local track and he said if I wanted to race my car wheel to wheel I'd have to put in a 6pt. If I just want to run hot laps alone no roll bar/cage is needed. Just going by what the owner told me.??

that looks like a fun track. Your car is too nice to race wheel to wheel. See if they have open test sessions. Its not racing you just pull over and let faster cars pass you. Go at your own pace and have fun. Thats what i do. It ain't racing.
If you're going to a drag-racing track, then I'd suggest looking at the link HERE. There's a picture that describes the required roll bar needed, and for what ET categories.
