Default Engine decoding

I am trying to verify a engine in a 74 vet. VI173chb. Casting # on block is 3970010. I just not sure what I have. Thanks in advance for any help!

you have the correct block. but recheck your engin perfix. it should be CLB for a 305ci, 195hp with a manual tranny, and ca emissions. alos do you have an early car?

Looking in the black book CHB is a 75 350ci 165hp, at w/ 3970010 as the block.......hope this info helps and is correct. WB

That number should match your VIN

v is for flint plant, think it is 11 not i1 which is a november date. 73 is not right becuse this should be the day of that month....like the 13th or something....unfortinatley chb is a 74 code for an l48 350/165 with 8.5.1 comp and a 4bc with auto trans...not a 75 code, but my book could be wrong. could it be clb, that is a 74 code. as far as the block # it should start with a one and the third digit should be a letter, at laest that is what it says in my numbers book. Maybe some other guys can help clear this up. Good luck

15S is 75 that is what the second number 5 stands for.

Again it say's it's a 75 built in Nov. of 74
It should be more like 1Z37J5S405859
