I did mine on my 73 about a month ago. If you have small hands you can get to the back of the tach guage. Don't know if you're familiar with how the cable attaches to the guage, but on the guage there's a u-shaped spring clip that's pressed down while you pull the cable out with the other hand,..although I believe I managed to perfrom both tasks with one hand. Attaching the new cable to the guage is as simple as plugging it in,..you should hear or feel a slight "click" which will let you know the U-clip is correctly holding the cable connection.
The distributor side is pretty straight-forward, all you need is a pr. of channel locks to loosen the sleeve.
Here's a tip: your distributor has to be phased the correct direction or there will be too much of a bend in the tach cable and you'll be forever be replacing cables. You may have to pull the distributor and move it clockwise or CCW a tooth or two.
Page 288 (if 350) and pg 289 (454) of your AIM manual shows the corrcet distibutor orientation which will keep the tach cable happy.
Good luck!

good to know it IS possible without pulling the dash..... I need to replace mine as well.... and your point regarding the extreme bend by the distributor... well, thats why mine is broken!
