'Cause gasoline is like $2.99/gal. and Ethanol is like $0.70/gal.
So...$2.99 + $0.70 is....umm...well. You do the math.
The $0.70 a gallon for ethanol will displace each gallon of regular gas at $2.99 which in turn would cause you to spend less at the pump theoretically. 25 gallons of straight regular gas would cost more than a mix of 25 gallons of gas/ethanol mix.
I say theoretically because people who have flex fuel vehicles are bitching like crazy because they are actually spending more on gas in the long run per tank than someone with regular gas. They are getting SHIAT for gas mileage out of a tank of gas/ethanol mix compared to what they are getting mileage wise out of straight gas.
Alcohol contains about 50% of the BTU's available in gasoline. Thus, it would require 2X alcohol for the same approximate power. One problem, though. Alcohol is not efficient on compression ratios lower than about 13:1...
In our world (Australia) Ethanol fuel is about 4 cents a litre cheaper for a higher octane rated product. ULP(91) is currently about $1.32 /litre and Ethanol 95 octane is $1.28 /L.
Oh, and our octane ratings are different to the US.
ULP can be up to $1.40 /L when the discount cycle is at it's peak
Long sad story to explain it but yes it is more expensive. And I agree it should not be. Short story OUR government said to put the ethanol in our fuels without checking with small items such as refineries to produce it and growers as well as transpertation to truck the ethanol as we do not have a pipe line to run it through. So it is not only more expensive to produce for the time being but also to transport. Plus as just one company which is Pacific Ethanol Inc not only produces the ethonal but is also one of the largest growers of corn. So they also receive substidies for the ethonal they produce but also as a producer of corn. The good old US of A also just imported about 20million gals of the stuff of which we needed as we are way short and charged an import tax. Also we can produce the ethanol we need not only from corn but also from potatoes as well as sweet potatoes and give a larger amount of fuel per acre than corn. Another souce would be coal as we have an abundance of it as well. But that is a whole other story of pocket books lol. I am going to stop before I really get going lol.

If you have two gallons of gas at $3 bucks a gallon it equals $6 bucks.
If you have one gallon of gas at $3 bucks and a gallon of ethanol at $2 bucks a gallon it equals $5 bucks. It is cheaper in theory and per tank.
If it takes you more tank fulls of gas/ethanol mix to travel 100 miles than it takes you to travel 100 miles on straight gas your actually not saving yourself any money. (more fill ups)
I guess im not explaining it clearly. Hope this helps.
If I drive half an hour south of chicago I can get 89 octane E10 cheaper than 87 octane straight gas at the same station. One of the few perks of living in the corn belt
So is this some kind of conspiracy with the government? whats the whole point of this e-10 any way then..? would it benfit us in the long run like brazil? or is our country to big to undergo such a change?
Who knows whats going on in their heads. My mom was so mad at the gas prices she was threatening to go buy a flex fuel vehicle until I sat her down and explained it to her. No telling how many people actually think flex fuel is saving them money when it actuality its costing them more.
As one member said, flex fuel is to curb our consumption of oil and to help in that aspect. Not really to save money on gas.
