"If I was somehow without remedy (which I am confident is not the case given the facts) I would possibly have the money to buy a frame and find some shade tree mechanic who would be able to do it for what I could afford. I would be assed-out after this (based on a few thousand for the frame, and $$$ going to the mechanic) and would have to pray that NOTHING else goes wrong (which we all know isn't likely). I would probably sell the car at the loss given this situation (unless you guys knew some shortcuts to keep/fix her), but I suspect that this situation where I absorb 100% of this is extremely unlikely."
I would go for a complete refund of all expenditures you have made. (Maybe extra for your headaches).
It sounds as if you have a few $$, but unforeseen problems would deal you some very real misery. I have to advise this: (since I'm much older than you), no matter how badly you want a vette RIGHT NOW, wait a bit longer when you can really afford it along with the oh,oh's that will happen. You don't want something sitting in your driveway that you have to sell at a loss so that you can make ends meet. there are plenty of cars out there in all kinds of conditions and now you know a whole lot more to look for. That's my dos centavos
Lots of good advice. As previously stated, a frame-off is a BIG Job, and you better know what you're doing, and you will find other things that need to be replaced. If it is an option, it can be a fun job, and you'll know your car inside and out, literally. If you have to pay someone to do it, the cost is too much, unless you have a lot of money and/or really love that car. Good luck.
I have to go with the consensus above. You are going to be much happier if you can get your money back and look for a better car. If you can't even enjoy the car by cruising in it you will not enjoy it and it will end up becoming an unfinished project. If the buyer did not mention the rust issues i can't see why you should not be able to get your money back on this. If you do get out of it make sure you check with the site before you get another one and see if you can someone close by pre inspect the car for you. Good luck
FWIW; one thing I have not heard mentioned yet - a concept hard for some of us to grasp - at some point the car is worth more in parts than as a whole...in other words, if you choose (or are forced) to keep it there is always option "C", part the car out. Still a huge undertaking but a valid option that will net some ROI.
1)Do you have a garage to call your own for the next five years?
.......and off course then for ever after, once you have completed your project.
2)Would you enjoy being locked up in this garage for 10-50 hours per week for the next five years?
3)Do you have the patience to leave said garage 25 times per week to post a question on the forum and then wait for the answer to get you going again?
4)Can you buy at least $1000 worth of tools and gear to start your project? This does not include car parts!!
Understand too that you have a learning curve just in wrenching to cover first before you can even start a project like this.
Paying someone else to do it is only good if you have $20 000.00 in your pocket for labor costs......it does not stop at the frame.....those torn seats alone will cost you $500 for the covers and another 2-400 for covering and installing, $1000 right there.
Be honest with yourself, don't try to be a hero. That car will eat your brain once you start tinkering with it and then it will swallow your wallet while your tortured brain watches in agony.
This is a gorgeous car but it has issues, bad issues and they are more than skin deep.
If this were a woman, would you marry her? Because that is what this decision amounts to. It is a committment to rebuilding her from the ground up. She is not for you, pass and find a more worthy investment, YOU deserve better.
If I were you and didn't have a garage, tools, or mechanical skills to tackle the job, then I would keep the car and try to do it myself. Why? I don't know, Just thought I'd go against the grain and give you an option.
