Default Shocks ...?

Do shocks have a shelf life?

So, does it matter when they were manufactured and how long they have been sitting on the shelf?

Does it effect the performance?

With no use the seals have a tendency to dry out causing leaks. By putting those on you risk having to take them off again to replace. I would buy new ones and have peace of mind knowing the seals and mechanisms are in good shape.

Yes, shocks have a shelf life and will eventually go bad. When I worked at Hunter Engineering, the training guys had a brand new McPherson strut that was about 10 years old. The thing was completely worthless, you could push and pull the shaft to any position you wanted it in. They used it to illustrate that exact point, and to show how useless a worn-out shock is.

I think the best way to base it is, how long do they last on a car before you must replace them. Thats their (shelf) life.

Ok well when you order some shocks, there's no way to tell how long they sat on the shelf at the supplier before you receive them.
