I am needing to get new keys for the doors for my 76 (when I got the car the previous owner had lost them). I was told in the past that the rear compartmet lock is the same as the door locks. It is much easier to get that lock out and get it rekeyed so I need to be positive that the rear compartment lock is the exact same as the door locks. The reason why I question it is because the keyhole in the door locks and rear compartment locks look slightly different. If it matters my vin indicates that it is an early production model made in January of 76.
do you have the key for the back?i was going to get my door locks re-keyed cause i lost the keys, you need the working key to get the lock open in order to change it.
they may be able to make u a key from the serial # tho.
I do not have any keys except the ignition key. However it is very easy to get a key made with the key lock cylinder code. There is a code inside the rear compartment lock cylinder so I could easily get a key made for that. The question is whether that key will also then work for the door locks. I was told that they are the exact same lock, so if I get a new key made for the rear compartment and it is the same as they door then the key will therefore open the door lock as well
Getting the lock cylinders out of the door to get it rekeyed would be alot more work then just getting the rear lock rekeyed so if they ARE the same then I just need to get the rear compartment lock cylinder code and I can get a new key made.
The rear compartment lock and the doors are one and the same.
Thats exactly what I needed to know. I will contact AAA and see if I can get someone out to rekey the locks and use the rear compartment lock cylinder code to create teh keys.
