What is good to help remove the build up of crud underneath the car? My wife was under there with some simple green for a while and made some progress. Is there anything better to use?
Simple Green is a really good degreaser. Gunk works well too, but I'd imagine just getting your wife under the car was enough of a herculean task without having her smell like a refinery too. If you have really thick crap to cut through get a jug of mineral spirits, put it in a spray bottle and scrub it in with a scotch-brite pad, then you can finish cleaning it with Simple Green or Gunk. If you can get your hands on a pressure washer that can take a lot of the elbow grease out of the job too.

Well we bought this 71 vert for my wife, so it is her car. She has been great about wanting to do stuff to it. I have a wife who wants sidepipes for christmas - gotta love that.
Non-lye type oven cleaner.
If your wife wants sidepipes, she might not know what oven cleaner is.
Easy-off in the blue can (fume free) to cut through the crud ... then simple green. http://housekeeping.about.com/gi/dyn....easyoff.us%2F
A small power washer would help much after each cleaner has done it's job.
I didn't use this helpfull tip. I used kerosene with a scrub brush, followed by
Castrol super clean (purple stuff). Kerosene works well, but messy.
Castrol is a great (albeit corrosive) cleaner - don't breath it in (cough cough).
