Default GM's old Prototype Hood Design

Looking at a couple of the pics that luerja posted in the St. Louis Corvette plant thread, I couldn't help but admire the prototype hi rise hood design that those old clay mockups had. This one has some clean lines and would offer the much talked about clearance that some of the aftermarket engine applications need. I think they were planning a chrome type louver on the front of this one to act as a ram air induction?????? Probably still not high enough for RamJet 502 though

It looks ok but I think I would continue the "rise" to the cowl. It looks like a bulge because the back of the rise starts to go down in the back towards the windshield.

Yeh I think you have a good point, I think it would look good if it went straight back and not down. Continuing the rise on the same slope would appear large and it is probably not needed in the rear for clearance.

I wonder if they were considering a stinger type cutout on the front, that would look ok to.

that almost looks like an early version of my hood.....at the tallest (above the air cleaner) mine is 6". I can get copies of the hood below BUT it would be a skin only, you could easily attach it to a stock hood frame. e-mail me direct if your interested. redvetracr@msn.com

Thanks red......but I already got mine.....and am happy with it. I was just admiring some of the past design concepts. From the date on the pic they were playing with this back in 64-65. Got to hand it to you though, you don't miss a chance for a sales plug

That is a great pic, thanks for sharing!

I actually like the design where it goes down in the back, emulates the humps of the wheel wells and just seems to flow much better for me.

Very cool!

Yes.... Gen-1 Camaro. Think of all the good times those guys had in the design studio...talking smack about big-block engines, raggin' the Fords and Chryslers and how they would be tearing up the streets in a couple of years.

Note how closely it resembles a '73 nose.

Look at the drawings of the Camaro on the wall....the rear end is more slender and it has Vette-like round tail lights....

BTW, very cool pic and topic

Great Observation Kid! Zora was quoted as saying the 73 was the car that most closely matched the original design.

I like the 73 best myself but I think it was Larry Shinoda (not Zora) that originaly said that. Larry was the pen behind the C-3 body design.

Clay model pics are awesome!

Shinoda's quote was, "The styling is obviously my favourite aspect. But mostly its the soft front and rear that we developed starting with the XP-819. My favourite of the cars is the 1973. I really like the soft nose. The soft rear on the 1974 doesn't thrill me as much as the earlier rear-end treatments. In fact it reminds me of the J-30 which in turn seems to have been styled after a steaming dog turd."

I stand corrected. I knew somebody said it!

I think I see a drawing of the C6 on the board in the back. Gotta love GM, always planning ahead.
