My radio died so I bought a new sound system. My old basel is shot. I'm waiting on the new one. Today I removed the radio. Easy job but getting the basel out is a different story. I removed the 4 screws holding the basel to the dash. I pulled it down and out. Got it by the dash consol light but that was it. I don't want to pull on it any more until hear from somebody who has done this job before.

There are 2 screws under the radio holding the console to the bezel-that probably wasnt clear-the screws come from bottom side of console and go up through the console into bezel

my mom always said the key ingredient to her award winning spaghetti sauce was the basel she put in it, also known as basil. however i don't think that applies here, i think u mean a "bezel". i'm quite familiar w/73 bezels & all like it but i'm not familiar w/78's so i can't help but others will chime in shortly
If you cant pull out the instrument/radio bezel, and it feels as if it is stuck at the bottom, then there are two screws that are still attached to the console. There may be a bracket in place that goes across the console to help give it stenght that the bottom of the bezel will go into, and then bolt from the bottom.
Take out the side trim and see if you can find the bolts, or take out the console shifter plate and determine if you can reach them from that angle.
After you remove those last two vertical screws you will want to take care to not scratch the console or BREAK any of those console control *****. You did disconnect the battery didn't you? I haven't seen mention of unplugging the gage cluster from the back of the bezel/gage assembly after you work it loose-it won't come all the way out until you do and mine had very little slack. You look/feel for the plug and squeeze the tabs on both sides and pull it out-be gentle as possible so as not to bend the circuit board copper foil "fingers"-a "straight-out" pull would be the best IMHO. Pull the defroster grill from the dash top and watch the ductwork position as you work the bezel out-this was problematic for me at the reinstallation stage since the top/back of the radio had very little clearance. Many suggest taking the console cover loose and moving it rearward for clearance. I have done it both ways and it does make the job much easier and safer. Good luck.
I took out my whole interior arready, and i had to take out my intrument bezel about 10 times due to errors i made. It can be taken out in about 1 min. Unscrew the two screws up top, then the two on the sides, Then there are two bolts, underneith the radio, that connects it to the center console. I think they are 9/16ths im not sure though. Undue the bolts, then it should push in and up, then pull it out.
Once you pull it most of the way out there are a couple plugs behind it, Ones behind the gauges in the middle of them all, its pretty big just push in on them and pull, the second is uptop you prob aready seen it. Undo them and pull out.
Sorry if the pictures dont really show much, these were the pictures i took randomly when i had my dash out for my heater core, and the job i did.
You can see the plug in the back im talking about, well you can see the wire leading to it.
LMAO @ UKPaul. I would think Basil would have Manuel doing the wrenching while he blames him for anything that goes wrong and violently beats him with a frying pan
Basil Fawlty, proprieter of Fawlty Towers (probably the best thing that ever happened to the English Tourist Board ). He'd probably beat it with a branch while ranting at it! http://www.fawltysite.net/
