Default pulling motor ?s

i am about to pull my motor on my 78 4spd,motor needs to be rebuilt, would it be easier to pull motor and tranny or just motor alone?
will be putting new centerforce clutch kit and new motor. i just want to know which way will be easier? thanks corvette forum

I can't really help, but I pulled both the motor and tranny from my 78 this summer so I just wanted to say have fun!

Pull 'em both. I've pulled the engine/tranny from my car twice and pulled both at the same time with no problems.

Pull 'em both. I've pulled the engine/tranny from my car twice and pulled both at the same time with no problems.
It's much easier to reassembel it all when it's out of the car...unless you have a lift.

Does the crossmember unbolt on the 78 or is it fixed?

When I did mine last spring I just pulled the engine. If you're not doing anything to the tranny, just leave it where it is.

not doing anything to the tranny ,but i am going to put a new clutch kit.,did the motor go back in real easy? anything to look for or watch out for? thanks alot

If the car was built with a manual trans the crossmember is fixed. All of the auto trans frames have removeable crossmembers. You have to look underneath to be sure - the frame could have been replaced, trans swap from auto to manual, etc.

The clutch kit just bolts right up to the flywheel. Just make sure your flywheel is in good shape, no grooves or warpage. Sometimes it can be resurfaced, but since it's apart, it's best to just get a new one. Make sure you use the alignment tool the kit comes with. A new throw-out bearing is a must also. It should come with the kit. That goes on the shaft of the tranny in the bellhousing......



When you lower the engine in place, slowly mate it to tranny to line up the splines. Wiggle it a little until you feel it mesh, and it should slide right in.

I knew that the 73' autos were bolt on and the 4 speeds are fixed but I wasnt sure about the newer years.. thanks

I have never pulled an engine with a standard shift without leaving the transmission attached to the engine.
I dont imagine it's too easy to line up the input shaft on a standard with the clutch disc upon the re-install.
Never tried it though.

It's really not that difficult (at least mine wasn't). But then again, I've only done one. The wiggle room you have while the engine is still supported by the cherry picker helps out a lot.

When I did the 327 in my '68...it went in pretty easy!! Not sure if I was lucky or good. I figured just luck!!!

I never even used an alignment tool. Just bolted the clutch up and used my finger for alignment!! Just be patient and pay attention to details. All will be fine, and when you light it off, it is VERY SWEET music!!!
