Default Progressive really screwed me

hit a curb at 5-10 mph, bent the frame, damaged the suspension. left front tire bends in at the bottom. Body shop said about $5500 to fix. I Had full coverage at $9000 with $1000 dect. Progressive says it was worth about $1500 before the Wreck. I Paid $6000 and had $3000 repairs made to it (Mostly electrical. Brake lights, turn signals power windows, wipers Ect). Like I said Progressive screwed me. I get $1500 and I get to keep the car. Any Ideas or options for me?

Did you have it insured at a set amount or just basic full coverage that you get with new cars?

I'm having a hard time following you but it sounds like you had "full coverage" and thats what the insurance company determines it worth according to thier market value. No different than the full coverage I have on my 2000 s10 and grand prix.

But if you have it insured at a set value ($9000) it doesn't seem like they can do that.

The coverage was for a max. of $9000 (My est of its worth). They would pay what it was actually worth up to that amount. I think it's worth more than $1500 as it sits now. It's great from the doors back. I thought they would come back with $6000 to $7000 which is still more than the damage. So Basiclly I have to come up with about $4000 to repair it.

Or buy $1500 worth of parts and fix it yourself.

$1500 will buy a lot of used parts and bondo.

its hard to feel too sorry for you because it was your fault.

What kind of car are we talking about? Is this your Vette we're talking about? Is Progressive saying that the reairs should only cost $1500, or are they saying it's totaled and only worth $1500?

Progressive will total a car based on book value, usually NADA or Kelly Blue Book. Obviously, most any Vette is worth more than $1500.00. I would ask them to please explain how they came to this number. Ask to see the book value they are using. At 70% of retail book value, they feel it is better to just consider the car totaled and pay you the full 100% pf the book value, (minus your deductible).

If they do that you'll most likely get a "salvage" stamp on the title, not a good thing.

Yes this is my 1980 vette with 134000 miles on it. I think they said they used NADA book value. They are totaling the car and giving me $1500. After I fix it I can apply for a new title with the state of Florida. This was a running car with what I would say was an average body (Looked great from about 20 ft away), Interior was OK at best (needed new seats more than anything). They said I could have an independant adjuster look at it (at my expense) and they would maybe reconsider. If they do give me more than $2500, I can't have the car back. Any adjuster in Central Florida that can Maybe help me?

This is a good example why the "agreed value" system the classic car insurers use is the way to go.

Well,...another way to look at it;

If your wrecked car is worth $2500.00 in it's current condition, and then they give you $1500.00 cash for the damage,...and then they are waiving the $1000.00 deductible,...you end up getting $5000.00 for a 1980 Vette that needed paint and interior.

Looking at it in that light,...the amount is not very far off.

Sent an Email to Progressive Headquarters.

Message: I hit a curb in my 1980 Corvette, doing about $5500 worth of
damage (Bent frame, cracked fenders, damaged suspension). I have full
coverage. Progressive is going to total my Corvette and give me $1500. I'm
being told that $1500 is book value on my car. I am feeling cheated here.
A below average 1980 corvette is worth over $6000, and mine was about
average ($7000 - $9000). I talked to other Corvette owners at Corvette
Forum and they agree with me. You can check out their replies at
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1509490
Is there anything you can do to help me?

I should find out soon how good a company Progressive is.

You need the services of a professional appraiser, one that is familar with older sports cars. Do not accept anyone that Progressive recommends, this person must work for you. If Progressive still will not budge, then it is lawyer time. Either they pay your damages & tell you to walk or there may be fraud involved. How can they sell you $9k of insurance on a car they believe is only worth $1500? I have to agree with some of the others, never buy anything less than agreed value insurance and don't use Progressive for anything.

My son has Progressive...whacked his truck(his fault) and things were handled very smoothly...but...truck was worth about $17,000 and damages were around $3000...it gets tougher when damages are close to current market or (stated value).

How did you bend the frame going 5-10 mph? Is your shop working you as well?

We had an adjuster come look at a '92 in our shop back in '96. Took a side hit (door, quarter panel repair). He said it was totalled .
I knew the fix was in...he says the salvage pool would pick it up before the end of the day. I said "not so fast"...lol. The 'Vette was totalled for $1,500 worth of repairs? Street value of $18,500 at the time. He no doubt wanted the 'Vette for himself. I never saw him again....

Sadly, it sounds like you will have a salvage or rebuilt title.

have Hagerty also ... agreed @ 37.5K w/ very high limits of liability (cannot exceed that of other vehicles), about $275/yr, over 50 but I don't have the best record. My other DD vehicles insured through ANPAC w/ very high limits of liability. I think Hagerty requires that you must have a DD vehicle insured by another insurer before Hagerty will insure the special vehicle. My Hagerty requires enclosed, locked storage/garage.

Progressive has done right by me in the past for newer vehicles. Hagerty has the policy on the 77.
