Default strong gas odor.

77 has been smelling like an open gas can as of late. No leaks detected and its difficult to pinpoint its origin. Would this be the charcoal cannister?? Gas cap looks fine? If cannister, who sells them?

could be your floats in your carb loading up ???
unburned fuel in your carb after turning it off, keeps dumping fuel........?
just a thought !

I just fixed a 77 today with the same problem. No visable leaks and smelled like somebody poored gas on the floor. On this car it was the small return fuel line leaking at the connection back at the gas tank.It was a very small leak and would drip on top of the right muffler and some would run inside the frame.None of the fuel ever made it to the ground.Another place on your car is just behind and under the passenger seat where the line takes a 90 and goes over the corner gusset. If it leaks there and there is dirt packed in there it will stink but wont get to the ground.

I had the same problem with my '79. it was the return hose on the top of the tank....just to the right of the gas cap. replaced the hoses and haven't had a problem since. Of course this was after I replaced the charcaol cannister.......

99% of the time that is what it is. Normally leaks right onto the muffler,
you need to get under there and look and get it taken care of.
