my 2002 F150's service engine light came on and stayed on today. this usually means a emissions control part is malfunctioning. usually the O2 sensor. how can i determine the exact cause of the light coming on? it runs and drives fine and where i live they don't check emissions. any problems running indefinitely this way without getting it fixed? thanks for any info.

It's not always emissions control.it could a hundred different things.Anything from a loose fuel cap to a misfire.Get someone to check it and let us know what the code is.Also just because the light goes off doesn't mean the problem "fixed itself".I see alot of this and my shop.People think since the light went off nothing is wrong. If your light goes off still have someone pull a code.It will store it even after the light is off until it is cleared.

LIGHTS ON ?
SIMPLE FIX, VERY EASY ......... F-150 FORD......... TRADE IT IN FOR A GM SIERRA OR SILVERADO !!!
My 2002 did the same think the other day also. Must be a ford think. Autozone reset it and it has been fine. BTW it was the O2 bank 2.
I think the moist air we are having lately is setting them off. Carbon and water don't mix well.
wow. that's what mine said too. my guy at Autozone was a lazy a**. took a while to get him off his butt to go check it. his scanner read P0174, O2 sensor on bank 2. he said there are four O2 sensors
(V6). 2 on each bank. one in front of the cat and one behind. i asked him which one it was. he just shrugged his shoulders. also, didn't tell me which side bank 2 is on. passenger or driver. also, didn't try to reset the computer. he did however quote me a price of $49.95 for the sensor. says it's "just like changing a spark plug".
so, where do i go from here. should i try to get someone to clear the code and see if that fixes it??? how do i determine "WHICH" sensor it is? how difficult is it to change it? how do i reset the computer if i do change it??
thanks for any info. you guys are the greatest!!!!
