did it ever happened to you to feel your engine is a bit lazy or, on the contrary to feel it quicker and more brilliant then usually, without any specific reason? well, it does happen to me all the time, it might be just a feeling but for sure my 406 engine sounds and 'feel' slightly different depending on what's the weather like, wet, dry, cold, warm, humid...i guess it's a 'pressure' iussue, bad weather=low pression...good weather=high pression...but it really performs in a different way. example: tonite the weather was clear, pretty dry and crispy cold, the engine sounded streight, full and went like a drag.
in cold and humid weather it gets a bit sleepy, in warm and humid even lazier. cold and dry=it's a rocket.
it does happen also to my griffith V8 engine, it could even arrive to ping under full throttle when cold and humid weather...the day after weather changes and the engine goes back to normal performance.
Yes, in both my Vette and my wife's Miata(oops! Did I say that?). I'm pretty sure it has to do with the air temperature and the humidity level. I'm sure the engine performs better with cold air being sucked in through the carb, rather than warm. It'll add a few more horses. The humidity, I'm not sure of the effect.
Air density will make a difference. Cold dry air, inlet temperature is nice and cool, the air is not saturated so it picks up fuel vapors readily, life is good.
Hot & humid. Most carbs have trouble adjusting for the changes. Hot, the fuel vaporizes too quick and the metering circuits can't adjust, all the moisture in the air condenses and won't absorb any more.
I've seen lots of engines that would run great one day and terrible another- Density, temperature all make a difference.
