Default Paint comes off...

Repainted my stingray emblem with Testors enamel model paint...but it scratches off really easily. What shoul I do to the emblem to make the paint stick...scuff it up with some sandpaper maybe?

Powder coat will no work on chrome. If you do when it goes in the oven the chrome may lift or pop. I would try nail polish. Testors enamel isn't what it use to be.

First, use a good paint stripper over the whole emblem to remove every last bit of old paint. Wash it well and let dry. Go to a craft store and find "Porcelain" paints for glass and metals; they come in small bottles but you don't need much. Buy a very fine, small {good quality} paint brush. Put some paint on the brush and just touch it to the metal--it will flow into the space rather than you needing to "brush" it on. Do one color at a time and let dry between colors. Suggest that you start with the checkered flag; it's easier and it will be good practice for the red flag. After you get done with all colors and the part is dry, follow the directions to BAKE the paint. Use a temp gage or an accurate oven, and for the time specified on the bottle. When you get done, it will be a great paint job that will last in the sun and weather and not peel.
[P.S. You may have to do this process a couple of times before you get "good" at the painting process.]

Buy new ones, there not a lot of $$$, then sell your old ones on 3bay. You should get about 1/2 your money back by selling the old ones. 180087311864

No lead in it anymore. The older model paints were better and had lead in them.

You could always just repaint them....then shoot some clear coat on.

stinger12,
I know of a powder coater who uses testors paint pens on lettering for valve covers all the time. He then clear cloats over the top and the paint holds up to the heat. Powder coat will work on chrome, it just needs to be prepped well.
Artsvette73 is right about some chrome. If its cheap or damaged, it may flake or bubble.

Let me correct myself. The powder coater uses the paint pens to color what he wants and then clear powder coates over it to protect it.

I refuse to replace my emblems, because they looked as good as new when I repainted them - the only problem with them was that the paint came off with my fingernail really easy...so I need to find a way of making flat black paint stick. Any more ideas guys?
