personaly i like flowmaster 40 series original. no sound sweeter than that. pick em up on ebay, but make sure you get the right model. they have different i/o sizes and placement for custom applications. a catalog like jegs or summit will help you find what you need or im sure you can get it on their website. i think i paid 100 for my pair shipped

Many racetracks have sound requirements that the cars not be more than 95 db. Usually measured on the front straight 20 to 50' off the track surface (side not above). If your street car is louder than a race car, you might want to rethink things. /:\

I have a pair of Magnas on my Durango and they sound better to me than the Flowmasters.

95dB is excessive by ANY standard..considering that 100dB is "benchmarked" as Jet Engine!!

Ninety Five db isn't really that loud guys. A jet engine is much louder than 95-100db, more like 140 db or so. Here is a table that show you examples of different SPLs.

http://home.new.rr.com/trumpetb/audio/dBexamp.html

and another that has some other samples.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decibel

I have always wondered how Harley guys get away with the sound pressure levels they put out but a car putting out that sort of volume gets pulled over.

Jet engines are approx 100db during normal ground operations. (140db @ Take-off power) That's why all ground personnel MUST wear Hearing protection...It's the Law!!... You may think that 95db is not loud but the fact is prolonged exposure above 90db will result in hearing loss!!!...Possibly premanent!!!......Don't take my word for it ...Ask your doctor.

If you talking side pipes I would go w/hooker's they sound great and are legal in most states. Under the car I would go w/magnaflow, dynomax super turbo's or flowmaster. flowmaster being the loudest. I don't know but the older I get I like to hear the engine more then the exhaust. I friend of mine has a vert w/straight pipes no mufflers. Its too loud, doesn't sound like a vette more like a 1/4 mile drag car.

79 L82 Owner has the right idea, mostly, When I have to work traffic I like a nice sounding vehicle, Vetts, Fords, Chevys, It don't matter what brand, I am a car guy. But, when you meet the idiot, turning up a bunch of revs, burning off, or you can hear him/her three blocks away you can bet he is gonna get some "paper". My vette is quite loud so I drive it very carefully while in the city but do lean on it when I am on the hiway. When stopped be nice, polite and friendly. The Cop might just want to say "Nice wheels" or "Man nice ride, what you got in it?

As its "subjective" to the officer on patrol... There's a good chance that a Honda putting out the samd dB levels as a vette is going to get stopped first.

Yeah but only cause the officer wants to check out the Vette.

This situation reminds me of our now defunct "reasonable and prudent" speed limit in Montana. VERY subjective to the individual officer, and maybe his/her current level of boredom.

I've never met a Harley or Victory quieter than my car however at any RPM.

I agree...what's the db level of a Harley taking off at a light in front of you?

I ripped the diesel engine out of my dad's Oldsmobile, and put in a 350 gas engine. I left the diesel exhaust system in the car (it bolted right up). I could stick my fist into those big pipes! Boy, did that car run good! Those big diesel mufflers really sounded good, too! How 'bout that for an idea? They're cheap at the bone yards, too!

After I got my Magnaflows my next door neighbor told me that he could never hear my Vette idle in my driveway but he sure could now and thought it sounded nice. And he's an Omaha cop!

Kiss your ground clearance good by and you'll lose some low RPM torque.
