Default What is "excessive"

i looked up my city ord. and found no DB level for exaust, it just says "excessive".......... my "excessive" might be diffrent than the local police idea of it could be so do you think at 2k RPM 95 DB is "excessive"?

To be honest, I would suggest calling your local police station and ask to speak to the officer that handles all the patrol in your area. They divide it up so a specific officer may be in charge of the areas that you drive in most.

Get his mobile number, and speak with him about your project. Explain what you are doing, making sure not to give away any illegal details that may be present...and find out what he would consider excessive.

Hope and pray he's a car guy and likes Corvettes.

DB has given you good advice. The wording "excessive" gives them full descretion to decide for themselves.

excessive is when your exhaust is so loud that you cant hear what your wife is screaming from the passenger side...

that's why i love it

I would have to say that's a pretty vague definition. Which, as said above, means they can pull you over for whatever they feel is excessive. I do think 95Db at 2000 rpm is pretty loud though.

95dB is excessive by ANY standard..considering that 100dB is "benchmarked" as Jet Engine!!

DB is giving you some "sound" (no pun intended) advice!... If the limit is "subjective" and you have the blessing of the individulal(s) responsible. I doubt you'd find much trouble.

California law allows 95 db for performance exhaust....funny thing is,our local San Diego autocross restricts exhaust to 93 db....(city accomodation to local area residents).

OSHA requires work place hearing protection at levels 90 db and above...

DB gave you good advise, however, more important than the municipal ord. you really should check the state statue (state law). This will be much more specific. In Wisconsin, you cannot modify any exhaust system which would make it emit a louder sound than that of the factory system. ( I know, thats really lame) Now lets be realistic, as a police officer, I have a difficult time writing a car owner a citation for a somewhat louder system, especially if they've never been stopped for it- I dont expect "average Joe" to know all the laws. Bottom line, if you have the the unfortunate experience of being stopped by the officer that wants to write as many tickets as he/she can, he's going to find something anyway, just be respectful, dont lie, dont bring unecessary attenton to yourself by tromping on it every chance you get , and hope for the best if you should ever get stopped. Most police officers really dont know what the factory system sounded like, so they wont bother you, unless your doing something stupid. . . .and yes, flame throwers out the sidepipes might get you stopped

Usually the police stop loud exhaust cars because the mufflers/exhaust are rusted through and nearly falling off; its a good way to make contacts with people- usually people that Dont take care of their cars, dont take care of their drivers license's (suspended or revoked) or dont take care of their warrants.

anyway, hope this helps, and good luck PS- I just got my magnaflow system from Corvette Central yesterday, and I bet it's a little louder than factory

One last piece of advice. Exhaust rumble is nice to hear for us. Backpressure is not good. LOUD is just annoying, and will take away from the enjoyment of driving.

as I see this randommj, you've got a couple of things against you from the get go. Age and the Vette. The combination of the 2 is gonna' draw the PD like 'tater salad draws flies at a picnic. I got stopped years ago by a very nice officer for excessive noise. He heard me 2 blocks away, he said. But as the 3 guys on Harley's went by with straight pipes, be gave me a warning.

Along with a DB reading you need to know under what conditions. How far away is meter? Is it at idle..WOT...what? Temp, moisture content etc etc. They all change noise readings.

TX generally uses the term that you have to have an *effective muffling device*. My definition of effective has been that if I uncap it it gets louder..so it must be effective! I used that several times in my younger days and it worked everytime. They couldn't define effective either. I also showed up in court with some DB readings on my Camaro with 4" one chamber Flowmasters. I told them " Here are the readings....now tell me what the specs are and under what conditions. If I'm out of whack..then I'm guilty. But at least here are some readings." They of course couldn't produce anything and they dismissed ticket.

All that said....I find that these days I can run around with an 800+ HP motor using Dynomax Race Bullet mufflers and have never been stopped for noise. Age helps...and maybe I'm a litte more discreet about when I decide to wind 'er up!!

i just want a REALLy deep throaty sound, and ive found this http://www.spiralturbobaffles.com/product_tests.html and its the best sounding thing thus far, the DB rating i found (i think) came off a 502, so im thinking an L-48 will b a bit quieter, but if any hav found a REALLY deep and throaty muffler/baffle, tell me i want the exaust to DEMAND respect for the car (not myself), i want LOUD but i dont want the joy of driving to b gone, and it has to fot 4 inch pipe,

With those side pipes...you may want to start driving with an ear plug in your left ear...

...I'm kidding...but you will for sure start to tell a slight loss in that ear after lots of driving with side pipes. Trust me...I know. It came back every time for me...but I'm good like that.

In California,Leo's can issue tickets for loud exhausts without measuring DB levels...however,state referee stations exist for testing by car owners to prove their exhaust does not exceed 95 dba...the certificate is allowed in courts..

listen, in NYC we dont really bother older cars that were meant to sound like that unless someone complains or your being a moron in some parking lot and someone calls on you. The law was put on the books more for those hondas that strap on coffee cans on the back of the exhaust pipe and are pushin 90db goin 12mph in first gear redlining it. those things picked up really quickly late 90s and have faded out the last couple of years. ill mention now that if you can see through your muffler into your tailpipe its considered a defective muffler and here thats close to a thousand dollar ticket if you **** someone off. no one really expects a corvette thats been modified to be quiet, but please if you feel the need to rip down the road at open throttle do it away from me! looks really bad when we dont pull you over... but you still get credit for setting car alarms off 2 blocks away...

i hope esu doesnt read this or im gettin my *** stuck on TS duty for a while...sorry Lieu!

any one know of a different muffler then that will still give me a REALLY deep throaty sound, one that will CERTAINLY let the car breathe freely, and one that will make the corvette SOUND like a corvette?

Magna Flow mufflers. They are cheaper than the Flowmasters and any good exhaust shop can get them.
