Hell from what I can see - magnaflows are little more than fancy glass-packs.

The internal MagnaFlow muffler is designed of stainless steel perforated core, stainless steel wool, and an acoustical absorbent material -- superior to fiberglass (which many other manufacturers use).
Lets see what are the features of a glasspack?
  • Straight through design
  • perforated core (usually with little bits of perforation hanging out in flow stream.. but not always)
  • some sort of sound dampening material outside the core (in classic glass-packs this is fiberglass.. hence the name glass-pack)

Best I can tell a magna-flow has all those very same properties...no doubt they are a damn sight better engineered than cherry bombs or thrush header mounts. but they sure seem to match the description of a glass pack.

Albeit a much more expensive and better sounding glass pack than the glasspacks of yore

I had flowmasters on my '78, and I have magnaflows on my '68. In my opinion having both of them, I think I am going to swap out the magnaflows on my '68 to flowmasters.. I like the rumble of the flowmasters better.

Drone=resonance. Addig an "H"-pipe helps reduce the resonance considerably.

All these different types of mufflers and opinions. I'm sure they all sound different but good in their own way.

We should try to get some audio for each muffler. Idle and rev to 3000 rpm.

It is -20C here, my vette won't be starting.

it has to be recorded from 50 ft away at muffler height, thats how they measure DB to get "official" ratings

.............. whats resonance? is it audible? or is it just felt?

That being said, I prefer Walker dynomax mufflers. Very nice tone at idle and around town but throaty when opened up.

Me too, I have side pipes on mine...but one of my other '77s had header duals with a pair of Magnas and man they sounded amazing. Super low at idle...lots of bass, and the growl only got better as the RPMs increased.

Magnaflows are a cheap muffler with a high profit margin. Flowmasters are better.

removed spare tire carrier and ran true duals straight out from Hooker ceramics through 2 1/2" ss pipes ending in Imco Turbos. I like the muted throathy sound. Rich N.

Better profit margin??

It's a good thing there are so many choices of mufflers. Everybody's got a different opinion. There's no such thing as a perfect muffler (or a perfect "anything", for that matter).

It would be good if there was some way to measure these differences.

I like the Dynomax Turbo's. Mellow tone, not too quiet, not too loud.
