I have been reading threads on matching #'s, and where to locate them,so i decided to check mine out, it is a 78 L82,just purchased it for $4,500.00, it had been stored for 14 years. here are the #'s on front of the block. V0801CMR, and below those #'s are other #'s 18S437939. the 437939 matches the VIN #, this is good right? i have tried to decipher the #'s on some other web-sites, but im not following some of the things they say. also if this is the original motor, what kind of heads would it have if they are original? ( cc, intake valve size, exhaust size) are they called 202's? thanks for the help, this is my first vette just trying to learn everything i can about it.

Yes - those appear to be the original numbers, although I'm more familiar with earlier models. Have you checked out idavet.net?

I don't have time now to go look.

I bought the book "Corvette by the Numbers" by Colvin. Great resource!

Get it, you won't be sorry.

CMR Identification suffix, optional L-82 with 4 speed. The fifth character of your VIN should be a 4.

Looks like the engine is original for your '78.

I don't know the head specs for your motor, but they are almost certainly not 2.02s. This is the valve size (2.02") on early high-peformance small-block engines. I believe what many people call "camel-hump" heads could have been factory-equipped with 2.02 valves, but not all were. I'll take a wild-guess and say that the LT-1 heads were maybe 2.02s.
