Default Car Show

Well I entered a car show this weekend and finished third

Not that third place bothered me but there were several newer cars that got first and second.

It was a 100 point class everyone judged together

To give you an example, a local exotic car seller had around five-six entries which included one C6 vette, 2-3 Lambo's, and a Nissan sports car. The local radio station even came up to do a feature on him. All of these cars were newer than 2003.

Would you believe he had garnered three first place trophies, a second place? There was a guy that was sitting behind me that had a super clean model T that only got second place.

My car is nowhere perfect, but it has a brand new interior, newish paintjob, new rubber, wheels, detailed engine. I was there to show and put a lot of effort to get it where it is. I've broke my back several time. I did enjoy meeting with people and talking about my car, thats reward enough to me, I'm def proud of the hard work put into it.

I'm really dissapointed by the judging of the staff (all were older men) because it seems that they were bias towards multiple entries. I can kind of understand that because they makes up over half of the entries. But it broke my heart to see some really good 50's, 60's, and 70's cars to get second and third against brand spanking new cars that were getting first and second.

I've noticed that some of the fliers for other shows we got specified pre-92 vehicles only.

Given that criteria, you did very well IMO.

Sounds like a lazy club put this show on. There should be multiple categories for like vehicles/years so that you can be judged fairly.

Anyway congrats on your win.

Thanks!

Yeah I think up to a few years ago it had classes, then they went to a 100 point everybody in the same class system.

I think the biggest reason was to cut the cost on multiple trophies, they gave out plaques (with our car picture in it) which I liked. The entry fee was $40.

But I do agree it should be like it used to be with individual classes so everyone gets a fair shot at it. I think they would get more classic car entrants again.

They played 50's and 60's music the whole weekend and there were quite a few new exotics.....I had three Ferrari's next to me. They should have played some Limp Biskit

Keep in mind the whole purpose of my rant is how can you fairly judge a 25 + year old vehicle against a newer car? Like apples to oranges....

They have a motorcycle show here in town that they did the same thing with judging wise. Most people finally got fed up with it and the show has dwindled to a little bit of nothing. Comparing old stuff to brand new is ignorant. It made peoples hard work on their antique bikes seem insignificant. I feel your pain!

I know the feeling. A lot of times there is a clique. These guys all know each other and vote for each other. I entered a show with my 63. My class was modified corvette. Got 3rd behind a couple C5's with aftermarket wheels and lots of bling in the engine compartment. I bought mine for $15,000 and put a ton of work and $$$$ into it to get it to the condition it was. These guys opened their checkbook and took the car to the rim shop and bolted on a few shiny covers. Don't seem right.

I never get shows where brand new cars can rate as high as an old onethat had to be fully restored. It takes littel or no skill to buy a car and keep it perfect. Where as to buy a 30y.o. car and bring it back to perfect takes far more work and skill. At Chevy Vettefest a couple of years ago someone brought in a brand new stock Chevy truck (still had stikder and no miles) in and got a perfect score. While I understand why it got a perfect score it cheapens the work a restorer or customizer does. I think that there should be some type of factoring palced on the age of a car to even the playing field. I too have come in second in a number of shows to an almost stock brand new Corvette. I have started to not even really care about People's Choice shows as it is just about who invites the most friends. I was at one show, where I could tell the promoter was embarrased that I came in second as he spoke over and over what a beautiful car mine was and would garnish a first place at most shows on most days. The car that beat me was not nearly as nice as mine, but watching the owner it appeared that everyone was his buddy at the show and it was Partipant's Choice. I now fav or the shows where I am judged on criteria, but these can still issue top honors to brand new cars. I think a way around this issue is to always have succinct classes as well. That way you are in classes of like cars or like age.

Just research the shows you go to. The ones with high entry fees and few classes are either for charity drives (some of which I support) or for building the coffers of the club that put it on. As the old Crusader said to Indiana Jones..."Choose wisely."

This one was a charity drive, which I don't have a problem with. I'm glad it went to a good cause.......but they could have rated the cars a little better according to new vs old to give everyone a fair chance.

But like I said before the guy that took most of the first place spots was a big wig that brought attention to the show.

I feel like in a 100 point class you should automatically get a 20 point deduction if your car is newer than 20 years old. And 30 points if it's newer than 5 years old, That would make it fair for everyone.

But again I don't really think they actually "judged" the cars, they knew even before the show started who was getting what.

We have a show coming up here pretty soon. The Corvette's are broken up into two catagories, 1954 thru 1975 and 1976 thru current. About the same thing with Mustangs, being broken up at '72/'73. I'm sure my '76 would do well against a new Z06.

any jackass can keep a 2003 Vette clean enough for a car show. You on the other hand, have put a ton of work into it and watch him win with a newer car. that's why I wouldn't enter a show unless it has year-specific or generation-specific classes for judging.

Havin' said that, congrats on 3rd. Better than last...

I only go to a few shows, ones I know and I have friends going with me.
I go to have fun and don't care about winning anything. I rather go to cruise nights and hang out with friends and enjoy the cars.
I got frustrated in the begining also, but now I just have fun.

Everyone knows public type shows are are bogus! If you want fair go to a show where you are judged to certian criteria instead of againest each other...ie Bloomington Gold, NCRS etc. All other formats are a popularity contest so go for entertainment value instead of ego stroking.

Most shows around here have one Vette class. If a new one is in it then it's all over. Although I would never show a new car I don't have a problem with someone who does. I just wish they would put all the new cars in their own class so they can see who has to detail the least to win..............
