Replace 75 Door handle opening control
Its about a $70 dollar part, but what is the best way
to remove the door panel and install the not yet ordered part.
Any help is appreciated,
William
Remove the door pull strap - 2 Phillips screws.
Remove lock **** - 1 clip (Use small flathead.)
Remove panel screws - 1 Phillips each on doorjamb fore and aft.
Window crank - 1 clip (Use small flathead.)
Door handles - 1 Phillips and slide handle out.
Note: Power window door panels will not have a window crank or clip.
Pop the plastic Velcro clasps with your fingers. Lift and slide off.
The door latch mechanism is much harder as you have three linkages to detach, and three bulkhead Phillips screws to take out. Maybe even a water gutter to pull out.
The mechanism itself will be a real pain in the butt to get out. Twist it and rotate it until it fits through the opening that GM made too small.
Replace with the good pricey part that I think you are getting anyway, and replace by reversing the process outlined above.
Good luck.
Is the part that broke the actual chrome door handle piece you pull with your hand or was it the inner mechanism? If it's just the chrome handle I'm pretty sure I've got an extra one I'd be happy to send you.
Best,
Greg
The handle is ok, the machine screw treads in the control are
striped, and maybe part of the control mech is worn/broken.
I figured that as long as I was diving into the door I should
order and replace the control mech, its 32 years old.
Thanks for you generous offer
William

Last night I opened up my driver's side door, and the handle broke off also. It looks like just the metal of the handle became brittle and snapped. Will I need to go through the whole process of above? Or just order the handle (the broken part) and replace it? Hopefully not the mechanism thing?? thanks...

You'll need a new handle for sure and I don't think you'll be able to replace the handle with the panel in place.
