Default 454HO Up & Running Install Pics

No problems on startup, no leaks, no odd noises.....LOVE the torque...all I can say is my clutch is now redundant

Some of the minor problems with install:

1. Had to modify LS6 intake heat shield to fit the Gen 6 valley
2. Centre link hit Moroso pan on hard lock
3. Incorrect parts cost 2 weeks down time waiting for replacements, especially pulleys, LH exhaust manifold and the upper radiator brackets & rubber mounts that I forgot to order....
4. LH side pipe was manufactured wrong....only 2" clearance....simple heat and bend up, but this is the 2nd set of pipes that I've had to have altered due to poor quality of parts....
5. Lost 3/4" in height on front....Moroso pan only has 90mm clearance....uprated aftermarket springs installed 3 years ago are not up to the task...I've ordered 550lb GM springs which will be installed soon....

The bracket supporting the MSD 6AL box was shaped to the inner fender well and the box can be removed without removing the bracket.....BB alternator pulleys are different than SB, instead of waiting for another part I decided to pack the alternator forward, mainly so I can install taller valve covers.....had to have 2 of the brackets refabricated to do this, but it will be worth it....the black covers have to go

Also, I polished the expansion tank for the photo....

The Gen 6 block has no boss for the Z-bar, so this bracket is required. Also, the Z-bar needs to be cut down to fit...there's good info on the Forum on how to do this....

Runs cooler than the 350 with new radiator, fan & shroud incl seals, & water pump....noticeably hotter in cabin though !!!!

Only problem I've had was starting it yesterday after sitting for 3 days....I've learned that an 800 double pumper needs a lot more "food" than the 600 on my 350

Thanks to the Forum for the advice

The motor looks great. I have the same one in my Vette, good luck finding valve covers for it. Short ones are too short, they hit the rockers, tall ones wont fit under the vac.can on the right side firewall. I have tried two different sets so far. I am now going to sandblast the black ones and either polish or repaint. If you find a set that will fit, will you let me know?
Thanks, Dave

When you say cut down, where did you have to cut the Z bar down at? I cannot see it in the pics posted or should I?

These fit (at least they fit my Mark IV with roller rockers. Isn't the Gen VI the same?):

They clear roller rockers with a double cork gasket like Fel-Pro 1630.

Do you have any pics or links of the valves covers you have tried ? How much clearance is needed ?

After all that work moving the alternator forward, I'm thinking it might be possible to modify the vacuum can

Hope you're enjoying the motor as much as I have so far

No you can't see it in the pic....it has to be cut out of the middle of the Z-bar....you can't cut the end because there won't be enough cover/bearing for the ball stud.....

zbc51 describes the process perfectly in his thread on a 502 install into a '66:

Hope this helps

Looks awesome standup. I'm sure you'll be quite happy now, I know I was. Is that 454HO a roller cam?

How much needs to be trimmed off the Z-bar? I never heard of that being needed.

There is no clutch boss on the motor. I used a bracket from Scoggin Dickey which attaches to the bellhousing bolts. Real nice piece, but clutch z-bar will not fit because of the width of the bracket. What I did was to shorten the z-bar by the width of the bracket by cutting the z-bar, removing a small aount of the shaft and then rewelding it. I scribed some reference lines on the shaft so I could keep it orientated. I really don't think there is any other way to dod this. I bought a new one from Corvette Central so I could return my car to stock.

I have tried a set of Early OEM covers, they were about 1/2 to short. Then I got a set from N.P.D(national Parts depot) they were about 3/4 in. to tall. I measured the OEM ones they were 2-1/2 in. so I think I need something in the 3inch to 3-1/2 inch range. These were inside measurements by laying a straight edge across the bottom of the cover to the top of the cover. Most of the tall ones I have found are 4inch tall. I will have to check on the ones Zwede sent the link for, see if I can get some measurements.

Thanks and right now I'm quite happy

It's a hydraulic roller cam.....duration is 211 int / 230 ex...lift is .510 int / .540 ex...nothing too beasty or lumpy but it's still a nice street motor....the rest of the specs are here: http://www.gmperformanceparts.com/En...8774&engCat=bb

With 8.75:1 & side pipes it's alot quieter than my 9.3:1 350 with sides, but it still has a nasty growl to it

Since the location of the ball stud changes because of the bracket, the Z bar isn't square off the block, so it needs to be trimmed......the amount to trim is probably dependant on the car, but in my case it was the thickness of the bracket plus the gap between the block & the bracket....about 3/4".......

Wonder if those would work with poly locks?

They do work with poly locks. I have them and they clear roller rockers w/ polys as long as you use a double gasket.

You said at the start of this thread that the new engine is "noticeably hotter". Have you insulated under the carpeting in the front of the cabin? If not, you need to do so and put it all over the tranny tunnel (yes even under the radio and heater control), and as much firewall as you can get to. There is also a foam heat shield that rides on top of the transmission to keep engine heat from flowing back under the body. Do all that stuff and you will have a cool cabin. P.S. Reflectix is the best "bang for the buck" in insulating materials (Home Depot).
