With the recent changes at the pump, I was wondering what E85 would do to an old C3 carb engine. I understand thru some general conversation that E85 burns with oxygen released at a higher concentration than previous gas mixes and thus the new computers are not conditioned for that level. I thought---the vette doesn't have a computer to go out of whack. So what other considerations should there be before putting some in the tank?
I don't know what you would gain either. I have a dual rated truck that is no cheaper to run on e85 because of the decreased gas mileage. I honestly hate it because you have to fill up so often.
I did some more checking today and you both have it right. The fuel economy is terrible against regular gas and the tank will eat out with it in it. Thanks!!!
The main things you need to run E85 are different rubber hoses. It'll only eat away your tank if you let it sit in there for a LONG time. You could put an alcohol friendly lining in the tank and that'd prevent it from getting corroded. You'll also have to figure out a way to make it so you can deliver about 20% more fuel to your engine, too. The optimum a/f ratio for ethanol is like 9:1, instead of 13.7:1 for gas.
Your best bet is www.rochesterproducts.com they have a flex-jet kit for like $1000 that comes with EVERYTHING and is designed for Corvettes. Although a better bet is their flex-jection kit in either TBI or MPFI, which runs about $1500 - $1800. Again it comes with everything you need and allows you to run E85 or regular fuel. If you're really serious about wanting to use E85, give them a call and they can get ya a kit made.
You guys are getting ripped off!
Our E10 is cheaper than regular unleaded and higher octane. Yes you do use more but that is offset by the cheaper cost, and no pinging!
The ethanol in our E10 is also made from Sugar, which is abundant here. Cheaper than your corn based Ethanol.....

Well your oil is probably more heavily taxed than your ethanol, so that's part of the reason it costs more, for starters.
However you are correct about the sugar based ethanol, it is MUCH more efficient to make ethanol from sugar than it is to make it from corn. This is why Brazil is able have so many ethanol based vehicles instead of gasoline. If the USA had the climate to grow sugar, we could do similar. However, you can grow sugar in MANY places in the world and THEY could sell either the raw sugar cane or refine the ethanol themselves...
Yadda yadda yadda... It's not a 100% solution, but every little bit helps. Lower the consumption of oil and the price will go down, with the demand.
