I am doing my second frame off restore. This one is a 68 convertable. It appears that there might have been some sort of underbody insulation on the forward half of the body. There are many clips to hold something. Is anyone familiar with this ? I have it all cleaned up & ready to undercoat for looks & sound deadening which I did on a 73 recently. This is'nt going to be # matching so I'm not concerned about correctness. But if I can find a suitable substitute for whatever was there I would do it. Any help or suggestions will be great. Thanks
That was used to block exhaust heat. It was two metal shields (one on driver side one on pass) with an insulation like material between the fiberglass body and the metal sheet.
When the car was new, there was blanket insulation under there, held on by the clips. AIM shows it. If memory serves, ZIP has it if you want to replace it. Two pieces, a left and a right, foil backed fiberglass mat.
The clips are still in place on my '68 convertible, but the insulation is long gone.
Thanks guys.....I found it in my ZIP Catalog. I'm going to order it as long as all the clips are still in tact on the body. I figure the more heat & sound deadening the better. Right ?
I wouldn't put undercoating on the bottom side of the car, if it were me. There wasn't any on it originally, and if you went to sell it, could be a problem. You need to put a heat "blanket" under your carpeting; then you won't have cabin heat. The standard heat shielding and foil blanket are good things to do...and correct for the car. Also, I'm not sure what undercoating is designed for the heat your exhaust system is giving out under there; you may end up with unwanted vapors/fumes.

The clips are still available also. They are attached to the fiberglass with large soft rivets. Installation should be no problem if you have the body off.
You have to cut the insulation pads to fit into the car. The pads are insulation fiberglass sandwiched between an aluminum foil like material. The cuts will leave the fiberglass, a yellowish brown color, exposed. I bought aluminum foil adhesive "tape" and taped over the cuts to crate an all aluminum foil looking appearance. This also prevents oil and rode dirt from getting into the fiberglass insulation. Also, there's another part to buy, a foil lined insulation "sleave" that fits into the upper most part of the internal transmission tunnel. And finally you can buy a foam "horse shoe" collar that fits between transmission and tunnel to keep hot air from flowing into the top of the transmission tunnel.
if your 68 is like my 69 their is a two piece shield directly under each side --- a metal piece directly under each floor board with a plastic piece attached extending it up into the firewall --- under these shields is a insulation blanket with foil on one side --- I recently ordered from Ecklers the Drivers side insulation pad but now am having my own issue trying to figure out why it is wider than fits directly under these panels. good luck..
68 front shields are plastic and attach with rubber studs at the top and bolts at the bottom. Lower shields fiber board. Not sure how long these lasted after the first time you hit a rain storm, but my guess is not long. BTW - My early 68 shows no sign of under body shields, only the lower exhaust shields.
Budman - you must be talking about the aluminum wrapped insulation that is in the L shape.
But once mine is together, I was wondering if adding small aluminum shields to the side exhaust pipes right after the manifolds and before the side exhaust covers. ... but that's another subject.
76yellow.... I was going to use DEI Floor and Tunnel to cover the firewall and underside of the flooring... but reduced it to the trans tunnel only (for now at least) I will try to post pics when I can
