I used to have a Chrysler 300C and this myth went around on that forum a few years ago...Very hotly debated on that forum. It was fun to read everyone's opinion. I personally think it is bunk. Acetone is so cheap and easy to add to gas, why wouldn't gas companies use it in their regular mixes if it was so good?
In the late 60s and early 70s it was common to add about an ounce of acetone to a tank just to help cold starting when it was below 0 temp outside. It was easy to flood out and deplete the battery when that cold. You could sometimes feel the difference.
With the introduction of electronic ignition, it wasn't necessary for cars anymore.
Probably few knew the chemistry behind it back then, but it was common practice in some circles.
in small enough concetrations wont hurt a thing. Normally the better fuel injection/carb cleaners use acetone as a carrier agent. too much is bad though....will rot rubber.
Getting a perfect burn would make me cautious about the heat involved. I would think that head temps would be higher, as in running very lean and clean.

When I first read about this, I was the one of the guys trying it to see if it would work. I had a high mileage work car and thought what the heck, it might help. I used it for several weeks and slowly increased the concentration to what was recommended by the paper. I used the whole quart over the course of my experiment. I never really noticed any difference in my mileage.
If you've done enough research to know: 1) that it will be cost effective [re. mileage with and without the acetone and cost comparisons. and 2) that the acetone will not degrade the fuel tank liner, the flexible fuel hoses, nor damage anything in the carb....go for it. Then you can tell the rest of us if it really is beneficial or not.
