Default Slide Hammers

I need to remove some minor dents from my frame before powder coat. Do slide hammers just use regular screws when removing dents...or are they special screws? What size slide hammer to you recommend? I am referring to dents which I cannot get access to from behind...so I can't use a hammer and dolly on these dents.

I'd say trying to remove the dents you describe would be difficult with a slide hammer. You will pull only in the area around the screw and it will need to be hammered back down. Without a dolly it would be very difficult to get right. As an option, I would suggest trying to level the small dent with JB Weld. It is relatively easy to level and very hard when cured. It should hold up to the temps of powder coating without any problem, but check with your painter, or call JB first.

If you plan on using a slide hammer, I'd suggest renting or borrowing a stud welding gun so you aren't drilling a bunch of holes in your frame. Pull the dents and grind off the studs. What is nice with these is that you can lay down a bunch of them in an area and pull it out very clean.

I wouldn't want to slide hammer that area either. As posted above, JB weld will fill out the small "dents". Not sure how JB weld reacts to powder coat process but it works good with paint.

I had to open this thread just to see how someone was planning to use a slide hammer on a vette body.

Default brainbstorming...

a stud welder and bigger than normal stud, and a torch to heat up the area to be bent back, is my suggestion.

this assumes the frame is separate from the bnody, and that the stud welder is beefy enough for 1/8" thick metal. both major assumptions.

in my garage, i'd mig weld a stud that fit a slide hammer and use the torch with that, in lieu of the stud welder, as I dont got one.

That is what I thought at first... I believe he is working the frame.

Default Don't drill when using a slide hammer

I have been in the automotive metal rebuilding business for over thirty years and I never drill a hole when using a slide hammer. It only raises the metal in the center and creates more problems for you. Any time you use a slide hammer you should mig weld something to the dent that you can hook the slide hammer to, pull the dent out flush, then cut it off flush and grind smooth. I've used small bolts with a washer welded vertically on the head so you can hook into the washer. If you are doing a frame, because of the heavy gauge steel , you will have to heat the area being pulled. Any imperfections can be smoothed using All -Metal .
