Default Re-chroming help?

Anyone had any experience with chroming shops? I've called around the Pittsburgh area and I'm aghast at the prices I'm being quoted. I'm wondering if this might be out of line with other areas. I've been quoted $2500 to re-chrome a set of headers and pipes that have never been mounted. Any one have anyplace I should call or is this a normal price? God! Ya can buy new ones for about half that price!

How about these guys. They have done some work for me in the past. REAL THICK plating. Not close to you but some times you have to send stuff out to get a decent job done.

Default Reasonable Chrome Plating

Skip, You must have talked to Pauls chrome plating ( OUTRAGEOUS ) I live about 15 miles from you near Saxonburg and I take all of my small stuff for my restoration business to a guy ( Dale Eddy ) who has a small shop in Tarentum and does it since he retired. He does top notch work and is insanely reasonable but he only has a 2X2 tank that can do small parts. He will do steel or aluminum parts but don't like to do pot metal. He is a nice guy to do business with. If you want to contact him, he is at 7046Route 908Tarentum, Pa. Phone 724 224-5119 Tell him Bernie Knox from Knox's Metal Medic sent you. He will treat you fair. On the large parts there was another local guy that was very good and reasonable but not sure he is doing it anymore. I heard his wife recently passed away and I can't find a listing for him anymore. You might try information for Albert Custom Chrome in Cheswick, Pa. Hope this helps. BJ

Librandi's in Middletown, PA. http://www.carchrome.com/

I had some '61 bumpers and rear deck latches done by them. They were less expensive than several other vendors I checked and their work was top-notch. Search the C1-C2 forum (current and archives) for them and others as well.

Thanks, I thought Pauls was the only one near us.

Do you think Dale Eddy would do a set of rear bumpers? I'm guessing they would fit in a 2'x2' tank.

I just took my t-top center piece to Carlilse.Pauls chrome told me it was in mint condition and would do it for $5oo. I couldn't believe it . I got tired of shopping around and left it with them. I heard they do nice work but pricey.

Bob, I thought the same thing since corvette bumpers are less than 2x2, but the problem is that the one end of the bumper is too close to the bottom of the tank and it will not take the chrome properly. He has tried it. Sorry!

That is true, very nice work but not better than Eddy and very very expensive.

Hi Mark, I went to grade school in Bairdford. I'm not sure if the school is even there anymore. I work in RIDC park in Harmar so I still drive close to Bairdford every day on my way back and forth. I either go across RT. 910 or Saxonburg Blvd.

Librandi's did all the chrome for my 69. Excellent job and reasonably priced. The only thing it takes them a while there pretty busy.

If you are talking about the piece I think you are, it is stainless steel. Why have it chromed, just have it repolished!!!!! Could save some bucks...................B

They told me polishing was the same price because it took more labor than to just dip it. I don't know .I was just glad to gete it over with.

Thats odd, I thought, or was told, that the piece is polished first, then copper plated, repolished and then nickel plated. It is then polished again and given the chrome coat last (more or less clear and enhances the nickel layer). Seems to me just to polish it is 3 less steps, hopefully a chromer will step forward and elaborate on the process..................B

I do local stainless repair and polishing and that part would only take less than an hour providing it just needs buffed and doesn't have any damage or deep scratches, and stainless is much better quality than chrome.
