Default Floor level vent question

Hello

Just bought a C3, and see vents on the outside walls of the driver and passenger footwells. They look like outside air vents, but there's no lever that would normally open them. I assume that the heater vents are the ones on the tunnel. Looked at the owners manual but didn't see any reference to them.

Ok, have a good laugh... its a newbie question... but what are they?

Thanks in advance.

If you have A/C they are vacuum operated from the center console.

So do the vents on the outside of the footwells blow only A/C air to the floor?

Default Vents

If you have vent doors behind both the passenger and driver side kick panels your car did not come from the factory with air conditioning.

If this is the case, there should be a lever on each side of the console connected to a bowden cable which opens and closes the vents.

Default the plot thickens ......

Ok - not sure what I'm looking at here. First pic is the vent on the driver's side, second is the passenger's, and third is A/C. The driver's side seems to have sheet metal behind it. The passenger's seems to have additional "ductwork" behind it. I searched the sides of the console and could not find a lever that might be tied to the vents.

Any guesses?

There are no special separate levers tied to your vents on your car. You have factory A/C in your car. Your panel for the A/C and heat handle everything in your car just like any other GM vehicle with Air Conditioning. What year is your C-3 anyway? You left that out of your profile. Maybe you should post a picture of your A/C and heat Control. You should have an area that says Vent on it.

Default more info ....

Its a 1982. A picture of the climate control is below. Some questions:

o I thought that kickpannel vents were discontinued sometime in the
1970's -- surprised to see that on a 1982
o Does the passenger vent open whenever the climate control is
set on Vent? Does the temp control have to be set on cold?
o Don't understand why the driver's side has a vent cover, but no
opening or vent door behind it? Passenger side only?

Thanks again for your help.

When you have your temp control set on Vent and cold or hot you should have outside air come through the A/C vents not below in the kick panels. Everything is vacuum operated in your car as you probably saw vacuum hoses going to the diaphram cans in the kick panels. There won't be any air coming out of the kick panels onto the floor it will be channeled through vent hoses to come through your A/C vents as I just mentioned if everything is working properly.

Default Got it, but why are there floor vents?

What you described is what I would expect in a 1980's car.

So what is the purpose of the kickpannel vents? The passenger side appears to have a vent, ducting, a "door" that opens/closes, and vaccume equipment to open/close it. (see pictures above) If all the outside air comes out of the dash vents, why does it appear that there's a functional vent in the passenger kickpannel?

Further, I don't understand why there's a vent grate on the driver's side, but no ducting, "door" or vaccume equipment like on the passenger side.

Don't get me wrong, kickpannel vents are great for open-air driving. I'd really like to have or get them functional. Just want to understand the questions above.

Thanks again for your help.

Usually kick panel vents come on cars without factory Air Conditioning. It'ts just the way it is. It is done this way to channel air coming into the car to be used for the air conditioning, heat and vent. If it wasn't set up this way you would just be recirculating the air in the cab through your A/C and Heater.
