Default painted egg crates

I notice a lot of 70-72 cars with the egg crate side vent detail painted silver rather than the body color. Is this just personal preference on the part of owners or was this originally available from GM?

The entire side grill was chrome plated. The edges of the 'egg crate' were protected with a mask while the grill was painted body color. There are various ways to duplicate this detail with good results.

Metal of some kind - aluminum? The silver ones you see have just been stripped of paint and polished.

Most likely pot metal. They are too heavy to be aluminum.

Those certainly look good! I hope mine turn out that nice when finished. That's definitely what they should look like. And yes they are a pot metal that was entirely chrome plated on the exposed side and then painted, kind of like the front grilles.

What is done to the chrome prior to priming/painting?? The paint wont stick to the chrome..or will it?
