Default rechrome front grill assemblies?

Has anyone had their front grill assemblies rechromed?

And how much?

I hope someone chimes in. Mine could use a replate. I am sure you can look in Hemming's and find a plater. I am sure it won't be cheap.

It's got to be a lot cheaper than replacing them!

I dissagree.... these things are made of pot metal. If the chrome shop will even take them, be preparded to lay out some serious cash. They have to strip them down... grind off any oxidation, fill in pits, then bronze then chrome. Just redoing my rear bumpers was 600 bucks. I'm affaid what the grills would be. Mine should be chromed and then blacked out with the front edge chrome.... I just went with the full blackout. Not as pretty,... but pretty darn cheap.

I had my grills re-chromed for ~$200. They did fill in a crack. Bad part was they removed the sand-cast part.

If you aren't looking for NCRS quality they are fine.

I have a 70 and I'm sure the front grills are the same as the 72 mentioned here. They are not pot metal

They are cast aluminum that has been anodized and then chrome plated. There's not many chrome shops that will do aluminum.

My '71 grillework is all pot metal (not aluminum). The only anodized aluminum on the car are the rocker panels.

I just scrubbed mine up and painted them with spray paint.

I couldn't find a local shop to rechrome my '72 grills. I did what a previous poster had done. I stripped, then blacked out the grill work. My car is torch red with a black interior. The blacked out grills with the surrounding chrome looks great - and a heck of a lot cheaper than replacements.

I just saw an add for Pauls Chrome. The web address is www.paulschrome.com.
