Default 1970 Backup circuit cabling

I have a 70 that didnt have the backup light switch etc mounted onto the transmission (m21). I have purchased all of the components, switch, bracket, screws, levers etc. My main problem is finding where the wires from the switch go? Are the wires part of the cabling under the car (and if yes, where?) The switch came with a long lead. Does it go up through the tranny tunnel and connect to a "mate" in the console?

*PS* When I remove the two screws on the side the cover to mount the bracket, will I lose alot of tranny fluid? Will the gasket get compromised?

Thanks in advance, this is a great forum !

The mating connector is in the engine compartment and comes through the firewall on the drivers side. See photo. It's the pink/green wires. Don't recall if the bolt holes go all the way through the trannie, but even if they do, you won't loose much fluid.

Duke thanks so much for the reply. I'll look for the mating connector. The guy that restored the car was a stickler, so I'm sure its just a matter of finding it. He put insulation in the tranny tunnel and I'm just hoping its not under that. Thanks !

Duke,

Wasn't able to find the mating connector. The cabling is all taped and wrapped. The lead from the backup light switch is about 17-18" long so I dont think it would reach all the way to the engine compartment and then up to the mating connector. Any other ideas ? Thanks

Look for a black L shaped connector. My tranny switch is also missing and will be doing the same thing, but the wires & connector are luckly there.
Keep searching. Also look at the wire routing in the AIM.

The cable from the BU switch should be about 27" long. The mating connector wires come from the center console (left side). Remove the small console extension and you should see the harness like this. The one I'm holding is the BU light wires that then go up through a grommet in the firewall. Sounds like someone snipped your off.

Duke, really appreciate the input. If the lead coming from the BU switch is 27", how is it supposed to mate to the wires you describe ? Thanks

GD70 - you found your "L" connector in the engine compartment just past the firewall?

The wire comes up along the floorboard and toe kick then plugs into the "L" connector coming out of the firewall as shown in my first picture..

Yup. To the right (driver side) of the wiper motor.

In automatics the wire is in the consol but it can be run through the fire wall for a four speed. It's the same plug so check both places if a trans change was made at some time.

Before you plug in the switch use a 'jumper' in the connector to check for proper lighting of the reverse lights.

I got my lights operational first then I plugged in the connector. It was alot easier than getting in and out of the car and throwing it in and out of reverse.

Duke, I was finnaly able to get to install this. B/U light light and then fuse burns out. Checked green wire coming from car side and it tests as ground. Is this correct ?

Here's the schematic of the BU circuit. The green wire goes to the bulbs THEN to ground. You should not be showing a path to ground at the connector. Check for short in the green wire to the back of the car. The wire is in the rear harness and goes along the left rocker panel under the carpet.

I did exactly what Jim2527 said. For some reason the switch on my 79 4 spd is also missing. I jumped the wires coming out of the firewall and voila, backup lights lit up for the first time since I bough the car 2 years ago. The point was to make sure the DID work. I found the connector on mine off of a Lectric Limited poster size wire diagram.

Duke, Thanks for the reply. When I pulled the bulbs, the wire no longer tested as ground. Isn't this correct as the continunity test would go through the bulb to ground ?
