Default I Call Her Puddles

Having spent much time and $$$ fixing valve cover gaskets, power steering lines and brake line leaks, I have one leak remaining. The oil drain plug on my oil pan will not seal. I have had it retapped to the largest plug size and it still leaks. Any suggestions short of replacing the oil pan would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have seen something like that before and surprisingly it wasn't the plug leaking it was the weld around the bung.

You may not have to replace it but to properly fix it you should remove it.

Clean it thoroughly and inspect the inside of the pan where the bung is welded to it. I suspect it's leaking around the bung and not through the threads with the plug.

Just curious, but have you tried a nylon washer between the plug and the pan?

Puddles II - when I first got my '70 the mechanic working on it said
it was raining underneath - that is all types of fluids, and it was really
bad to the point the oil pan bolts could be turned by hand - thus some
good leaks. Now, years later all fixed for fun.

I agree with D- Boy. I just recently had the same problem with a 68 Firebird. Took the pan off and welded all around the bung. The problem was fixed.

Until I had done it 4-5 times, I would never have told anyone to do it, but do yourself a favor and get a new oil pan, a felpro 1 piece gasket and be done with it!

On the 80, I can have it out and back on in about an hour .....
