Timing Question???
I have a 1980 L82 and a mechanic who installed my new Edlebrock carb and intake said he thought a previous owner may have put on a bigger Cam. If this is the case doesn't that change my timing? My hormonic balancer doesn't have 1 timing line on it, it has 2 timing lines on it, side by side. There is about a 1/4" between the 2 lines. The 1980 manual I have on CD calls for 12 degree's BTDC. I have my timing set right now at the top line. I first set it between the lines but after I re-attached the Vacuum advance line it moved it to the top line. The car runs great but I sometimes get a slight dieseling at shut off and sometimes a short, but noticable, hard start like its advanced. This same mechanic said he thought someone had changed the hormonic balancer and he had to time it by ear, which I didn't understand because I can put a timing light on it and read it just fine. 'Timing by ear' is what you do without using the marks. You move it till it sounds crisp, and runs smooth. Starts easy and doesn't run-on after being shut off. If it does all that by ear, then it's tuned (without using the timing marks which may or may not be correct), close enough.
