Have you considered a single pair of good speakers in the kick panels as your drivers? A good set up front can sound better than four speakers in less than optimal positions.
any suggestions as to what brand/specs? I really would like to maintain the space for luggage, t-tops etc. I find that the dash speakers are neither loud enough to be heard over the engine nor of good sound. They are Kenwood replacements 60W.
I dont want to have to cut the kick panel covers. If there was a plate sepaker that would do the trick or some other type that would fit under the stock panel...

Part of the problem is power. What kind of head unit do you have? The speakers may just handle more than what the head unit is giving them to effectively sound good. Do you have any aversions to a small two channel amp for front speakers?

To be honest, fitting a speaker behind the kick panel is like talking to your best friend through a closet door. If it's originality, just save the stock kick panels, buy a new set for $35, and cut a hole in them.
With a good set of speakers for the application you can get really good sound out of two kick panel mounted speakers. If you amp them, they will sound even better and a small two channel amp could very easily fit in the passenger storage compartment.
I have no issues with an amp at all. I was thinking that one would mount easily behind the passenger dash pad. I have a 200W unit driving them but the sound is awful.
its a new version of the old radio. It is digital but made to look like the old radio. 200W. I am not after a skull grashing thump. My music tends to be around the year of my car. I never really got out of the 70s.
I just really would like to have a nice crisp sound, loud enough to hear over the engine. Mind you the duals do make some nice music...

One set of these, in your kick panels, amped, and you'll be happy as a clam.
ok
so really, what you are saying is that I install these kick panels from Polk and an amp from Cadence and I am good as gold. Is this with my having aBandoned the dash speakers or are they still in the mix?
I enjoy rear speakers, also called rear fill, but in many cases it involves a larger cabin. Say, a four door sedan, or an SUV. In a car with such a small cabin, as in a Corvette...your brain gets confused when hearing a combination of front and rear signals as the stage is set behind your head. Generally we tend to like sound better when the stage is in front of us. For example...would you go to a concert or symphony and sit backwards? In a larger cabin, the rear speakers interact with the front creating a stage that's just in front of you where you brain processes the sounds you hear better.

Yeah, what I'm saying is that with a good set of speakers, amped, in the right place, you will get much better sound that the crap dash speakers and if done right will sound a lot better than front and rear.
The kick panels are a much better location than the dash.
I appreciate your help!
Thanks
How do we post pictures here? I am in the process of a major engine overhaul (heads up) and would like to share some pics.

No problem. I'll be happy to walk you through the install if you've never done something like this before. I have done many custom C3 stereos.
Here, this link will help with posting pictures. Just read the paper and follow the steps.
