so i have a little project and sprayed it with some laquer in a spray can... think its duplicolor....got it at the paint store....... i believe i need to clear it.... if so, is there a clear in a spray can...... and how long do i need to wait before clear/base?..... i painted today but might recoat before i clear....
With laquers I've always had the best results when I let the color coat cure enough to wet sand it, then spray on the clear. House of color has a really nice clear laquer that does not yellow in time. I've also heard of people using urathae clear over laquer, but I have never tried it. The clear laquers are very easy to polish too.
does it come in a spray can?.... or you think i would have to buy a quart and have it canned?... i dont have a spray setup right now and project is due on monday
Last time I was at the paint shop, they said they were comining out with a line of rattle can laquers. I don't know that you could get it that quick though. How big is the item you are painting?
i got the laquer in a can... just want to get the clear in a can since the laquer shows any type of marks.............. picture a box about 6"x6"x27" thats about the size.... i went through 1.5 spray cans of laquer for it..... made sure it had some good coats........
project is for an architecture firm that i'm trying to hustle in some work from ...so i need to make sure the paint works out..... plus i just got the project in today and practically finished it up..just need about 2 more hours to complete
Another option is the local hobby shop. If they sell the Tamiya laquers there, you could use the clear. Only problem is it's expensive. It's about half the size of a large duplicolor can and cost about $4.50 a can. It goes on smooth and levels right out. Good stuff.
i know that theres an acrylic clear in a krylon... but i think that might now work...... not sure..... the paint store is open tomorrow till 12noon i think ...hopefully i can get it then
Here is another clear they make, but it's not as easy as laquer. http://www.duplicolor.com/projects/howto_wheel.html
That gets you to their website anyway.
Should be able to find it at a big brand autoparts like Advance Auto.
You can spray the clear anytime after the color in lacquer. For full gloss, a laquer should be sanded lightly with 600 or above and buffed with compound after it has dried.
Always spray a test piece with your work and experiment with that first.
dool... thats what the other can looks like...... thinking that since the client wants a semi gloss look then maybe i wont have to sand the clear.... if i knew this would have taken this much time i would have added a few more bucks...........................
I don't know about the rattle cans, and I'm not saying that this is a good practice, but I have seen it done MANY times over the years....as a rule.....you CAN spray urethane over lacquer, but no Lacquer over urethane. If you do go urethane over the lacquer...I'd mist the first coat, let flash very good, then mist another one,let flash, then give her a good dose. It's not a good practice to mix products, but I've seen it done.
