Default 73, 74, 75 cowl question

I bought some cowl door parts from a contact back east. While putting the order together, he asked me if my plastic screen was intact.

I don't have a plastic screen on my cowl induction, 73 hood. Should I?

Yes. You should have a black plastic screen on the rear of the hood. Held on with 3 chrome "acorn nuts" on top of screen and it snaps or clips into retainer slots on bottom side. I had to locate one a year or two ago. They were not being reproduced. I obtained one from a corvette salvage yard. It is shown in the AIM. GM Part No. 331847.

Since the air for engine intake is coming from that area, it can "suck up" airborne stuff...like, leaves, stones, paper, etc. That's not the kind of stuff you want in the engine. The grate is to keep that large stuff from getting ingested.

The air filter would still catch it. The cowl induction only feeds to the air filter housing, not right into the carb.

I still wouldn't want twigs and leaves in my air filter though
