I use the Mr Gasket UltraSeals (look like these with a square port).

The writing has to go out to the header flange because the notch is there for the temp gauge sensor.

I misunderstood completely. I was thinking he meant head gaskets.

I did not know "head" gaskets had writing on them that must face the heads mating surface. I've just always made sure the fire ring doesn't overhang into the bore and that all water and oil passages lined up...

Most of the ones I have used or seen have had some marking, writing, lines, ect...on just one side.

so, these markings must face the head for correct installation? I think that is what he was originally asking...

Well I asked the same question to a GM tech at the local service center and he told me that the markings would face the head. Also, that intake manifold gaskets, in the same way, the markings face the intake.

The writing has nothing to do with anything.

While I agree, as he told me, that most times it would not matter...it was just a good practice to follow just in case it did matter.

Now that one got my head spinning...I believe head gaskets have a very definitive orientation. (this side up or down).

The 'most' times comment was not directed toward the head gasket orientation, but the tech I spoke with was just giving me a general rule of thumb. For the head gasket he was very clear. Markings go towards the head. Then added that while it usually won't matter, it's god practice to face all markings away from the block itself.
