This is a stupid question, but what is the proper way to bend a cotter pin? Anything special...or do I just spread the legs apart?

I've always just spread the two sides of the pin and bent them back around the nut.

A cotter pin is a simple locking device for a threaded nut (castle nut). The pin going thru the bolt shank is the locking portion of it. The ends are bent around to keep it in place....and so that you don't tear flesh when you go to work on it again. Bend it however you want, as long as it locks the nut and doesn't interfere with something else.

There are wires in the arms, you just bend them.
